My wife gave me one of my presents early which we have enjoyed together for the last two nights. We went to Paul McCartney's concert in Dallas at the new Cowboy Stadium a few months ago, but the sound system almost ruined the fabulous performance. I just got a vintage set of JBL 240TI speakers to go along with some JBL Century 100s I have had since buying them new in 1972. We used the new ones to listen to the performance as we watched the DVD - outstanding performance! The drummer is Abe Laboriel Jr. who adds a lot to the otherwise spectacular performance. Crank up the volume and enjoy the concert from up close with great sound - you won't be disappointed. Bill

Ah, yes. . .

JBL 100s; the stuff of legends . . . .

A fraternity brother of mine had a set. JBL stopped replacing his, after he sent back the third pair, which he had blown out.

Another brother had a pair of Klipsch, which I remember as a really smokin' pair of speakers too.

I did get a little carried away over the past year, but I couldn't help myself. It was raining great deals on boats that I have always admired and revered.

It took me all summer to pay back my father for the pair of L-100s that I ordered from NYC in 1972. Mine sound as good today as the day I got them. There is a seller on ebay who is making the exact replacement foam waffled grills for them. Here is what might be a nice set of the L-100s, but his grills are not the originals. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=280429410239&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT

I grew up listening to my dad's Acoustic Research AR-11 speakers. Last year I found a pristine pair of AR90 floorstandings for a pretty good deal. They look just like these (same condition as well):

I've never listened to the JBL 100's, but I've always wanted to hear them.

Hey Bill, wasn't JBL (JB Lansing) part of the Temco of LTV fame? (Ling Temco Vought)
I could be wrong.

I was too lazy to read through it all and find the answer, but I believe it is in here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Altec_Lansing

My dad didn't have room for these so I have them. I love them. (One day I will veneer them and build the lids. They're factory-built, ordered unfinished.)

Still my favorite: JBL Hartsfield. (Looks like this gentleman still makes them. He's in Brighton, MI. http://www.classicaudiorepro.com/)

Those Acoustic Research speakers look fabulous with the side woofers. Here are my "new" JBL 240TIs - they are 36"x18"x12" and weigh in at 85lbs each and the cabinets are teak. The woofer weighs 18.5lbs so you know the bass is great - they have bass ports on the rear bottom of the cabinets. The guy I bought them from is an audiophile expert who actually makes some of his own cabinets that look as good as any furniture. He might offer me a set of JBL L-300s soon. His audio room is full of high dollar speakers and amps - a guy can only dream - lol. Bill

Yep, those horns are fabulous!
The guy I bought my JBLs from does his own veneer laminating that is out of this world georgeous. He told me he buys the veneer at a place in Ft. Worth. If you need any guidance, I could give you Mike's email address. Bill

Cones????

Horns????

Come on guys, man up and get yourself some panel drivers!

Best speakers I've had were a set of Eminent Technology LFT4's. I drove them with a modified Carver M500 amp but I can't remember what my preamp was, only that it was a tube unit. The source was a Digital Alchemy D-A and CD transporter. The best amp I ran with them was an old restored Harmon Kardon unit running KT-88 primary tubes. Not a ton of power, but extremely smooth and warm.

I've still got the D-A and transport, but the rest is long-gone. Truth be told, I don't even have a stereo set up at the house these days. Every time I think about doing another one, I start to quickly go off the deep end equipment wise and realize I'm better off just staying away from it. I've got enough expensive hobbies as it is, and most of them haven't been very good to my hearing over the years anyway. :boggled:

LOL, the high-efficiency drivers in those JBLs will knock your house off its foundation at 25 watts/channel.

Just before I got married I bought a nice CARVER amp/receiver and some decent Paradigm speakers. I have an old monster pair of Altec-Lansing speakers in the basement. They will play loud, but don't have the bass of the JBL-100s.

Funny thing is, I rarely ever play the stereo, and certainly not at any significant volume. It's no fun unless I'm home alone, including no dogs.

Our house is wired for sound through out, and we have JBL in wall speakers in the basement rec room, living room, dining room, master bedroom & master bath, with the Altecs in the gym, and Paradigms in the family room. Funny, the in-wall JBLs sound "OK" but really do a fine job for most of the listening we do anymore (Mannheim Steamroller Christmas music, etc.). I must be getting old.

I should add that if you ever get a chance to buy a set of L-100s, you won't be disappointed. They are extremely complete sounding speakers that produce huge volume with very little wattage - they are very efficient. I compared them to the Boze 901s, Altecs, Klipsch, etc. back in the 70s and chose them over the others. Bill
