I recently purchased a 1995 16 Classic, 1.84:1 reduction. The prop is marked: HD Quicksilver 48 16320 A423P. Prop seems to be in great shape but it allows the motor to rev very high (5500 RPM). I would like to limit the RPMs to the recommended 4400-4800 RPM. I physically measured the Diameter of the prop (13.5"). From the numbers stamped on the prop I THINK it is a 23 pitch. I would appreciate any and all advice and comments. Thanks in advance.

It's defintely a 23 inch pitch. What engine do you have?

Is it a solid hub, or rubber hub prop? That sounds too high like the prop is slipping.

Solid Hub
I pulled the prop off yesterday just to see if there was any obvious problems.......nothing looked weird. No matter where you trim the boat it will still over-rev. My guess is that the 1.84 gear has domething to do with it but not sure. I appreciate the help!

Lets hope it is not a solid hub, should never put one on a clutch dog drive shortens the lower unit life quite a bit! 1:84 with a 23 sounds right, I would verify that your tach is right and the the hub in the prop has not started to slip.

I'm pretty sure a 1.84 is correct for a 4.3. I still don't think it should rev that high. Check to be sure the tach is set for a V 6.

Thanks! I'll check the tach and make sure of the hub (solid or rubber). If it is solid should I change to another prop of just change hub? Is there a prop that is much better suited to the 16?

13.5" diameter is for an outboard.....

you need a 14.25-14.5 diameter outdrive prop

That prop is a bottom line merc prop. go with a name prop like a M+ or turbo one or a Solas eith the same pitch.

What about the diameter? Bigger, smaller, the same?

Look at the third one down in this list, that is the right size for an I/O.

FYI...My 1995 4.3 lx vortec with 4 barrel (205 hp) had the same prop on it, when I bought it second hand. It worked great taking the kids skiing....

Maybe ... but I've had brand new props that improved with a just little work .... considering the cost of a new prop, an extra day and a few $$ isn't a big deal ...
