This engine is advertised locally, just wondering if this would be worth the price to buy, restore and perhaps put in a boat? Is it as rare as stated? Good motors or??? Thanks for any info.

My boat was a 351C originally. It made great power but marine parts are nonexistant. You would have to get custom exhaust made. I think Big Grizz has CMI's. Because the bore spacing is close, I wanted to high port the exhaust on the Cleveland heads and drill the adaptor plate for BBC exhaust. Anyway, cool motor, but better for a mustang or torino project.

Do you know what the difference is between the 351C and the Cobra Jet...?

and I agree this is probably best left for somebody with a 1971 Mach 1....

I don't recall Ford ever making a 351 CJ, and I'm a Ford man. I could be wrong though. The 351 C had 2.19 intake valves and ports big enough to drop a cresent wrench in. I never saw one that ran really well. I had a 351 W that seemed to have more power. I think the 351C had too big of valves and ports. Neither one would outrun my buddy's 350 Nova. :(

Ford did make a Boss 351 Mustang. My other buddy bought it to beat the Nova, and never did.

The 351 cj was made May 1971-1974 280hp in 71/72. 73 on, it dropped to 246hp.

Wasn't the key to a CJ the heads?

The biggest difference in the performance 351C's were the heads. CJ motors had big chambers and big(4v) ports. The ports and valves on any 4v cleveland are HUGE, and don't start working until the rpms are up there. The 2v ports with an aftermarket manifold and 4brl carb was way better on the street. Any 4v head is scarce, the 4v small chambered head with adjustable rockers from the 71Boss 351's being the most rare.
The 72 CJ was the motor holman and moody used for my Donzi originally.

GREAT info, thanks guys!

I spoke with the owner of this motor and it came out of a 1971 Mustang and I was only guessing on my second post about a 1971 Mustang....:eek!:

According to him it is a 4V head WITH adjustable rockers.......I might just buy this and hold onto it for a while...!?

Cobra Jet block. D2AE-CA there are some unusual things about this engine- cast into the Valley in all 4 corners it has X X X and then underneath that YYVVYY (all corners have the X's, the YYVVYY varies with Y VVYY) not stamped, they are raised castings.

You booger!!!!!!!!!!!!

I never heard of, or saw a 351 CJ, and that was during my hayday of drag racing. My parents owned two 351 C 4v's, and neither one of them could pull a wet hair out of a butthole. My 351W would eat them alive. I heard the 351 C's ran better with 2v heads on them.

Do you know what the difference is between the 351C and the Cobra Jet...?

and I agree this is probably best left for somebody with a 1971 Mach 1....

Only the Q-code 351 "Cobra Jet" (1971-1974), R-code "Boss" 351 (1971), and R-code 351 "HO" (1972) versions have 4-bolt mains although all 335 series engines (351C/351M/400) have provision for them. The main difference between 351C/351M/400 engines is connecting rod length and main bearing size

Q-code (Cobra-Jet)
The Q-code "351 Cobra Jet" version was produced from May 1971 through the 1974 model year. It was a low-compression design that included open-chamber "4V" heads, a special intake manifold, special hi-lift long duration hydraulic camshaft, special valve springs and dampers, a 750 CFM 4300-D Motorcraft Carburetor, dual-point distributor, and 4-bolt main bearing caps. It was rated at 280 bhp (209 kW; 284 PS) for all 1971 applications; 266 hp (198 kW) (SAE net) for 1972 when installed in the Mustang (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ford_Mustang) and 248 hp (185 kW) in the Ford Torino (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ford_Torino) and Mercury Montego (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mercury_Montego). The horsepower rating dropped in 1973 to 246 hp (183 kW) for the 4-barrel for the intermediate Fords, and still retained the higher 266 hp (198 kW) rating in the Mustang. The 351 CJ (now referred to simply as the "351 4V") was rated at 255 hp (190 kW) in 1974 and was only installed in the Ford Torino (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ford_Torino), Mercury Montego (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mercury_Montego) and the Mercury Cougar (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mercury_Cougar).
