The shifting is done in the out drive, only a few models use a separate transmission. A shaft come through the transom to the engine, basically it is a package engine and drive assembly.

The transom will be sandwiched in between. The drive shaft will pass through into the fly wheel of the engine.

...Mr. Phil (MOP), and Mr. Hahnl !

(everyone starts somewhere, and we all need a mentor or two to get us "there")

Welcome Camarokid.....pay attention to these folks on here...tremendous depth and wealth of information on here.

What type of engine / drive combo are you considering ? Do you have an outdrive already ? If so, what type...Mercruiser, King Cobra, Cobra ? Pass along what info you have on it, and keep in mind you will need a marine engine to install.

I, personally, may not be much help, but post as much info on what you have and I feel certain you will be overwhelmed by the information others on this board can offer.

With kind regards,
Phil S

One other thought Camarokid....

"new to the boating world", to me, means you should strongly consider a boating safety course before your first launch (if you haven't done so already).

With kind regards,
Phil S

I'm no expert and not a motor head, but -

I'd say you want a marinized (sp?) Chevy 350. Brass freeze plugs, marine fuel pump, marine distributor (or just cap?), marine alternator, marine carb, and a cam that won't result in reversion (sucks water back into the cylinders). You could go wild on performance but Regazzi hull / configuration is not really conducive to performance. I'd shoot for 260 to 300 HP and be happy with what you get.

You can likely find a used take-out that will serve you well - maybe even but a complete boat and scavenge the engine for yours

You will not find a new Cobra, it is a pretty strong drive but parts are getting slim. To convert to another manufacturer will be pretty costly, do some thinking before you get to deep!

Welcome to Donzi's and donzi.net! As others have said, this is a great site for information, help, and fun. You've got guys here who have worked on boats for years, and maybe even a maveric who worked in the donzi factory once upon a time. You definitely have plenty of folks who have done restorations and have been where you are.

I too, am a novice mechanically, but I have learned A LOT in the last couple years (mostly due to the patience of BlownCrewCab!).

I like your 350 idea, but as MOP said, get everything set in your head and on paper before purchasing. A swap can get tricky and expensive, but swapping to a chevy is always a good call to me!

I agree that you will want to get a little training if you're completely new to boating. It's amazing how quickly things can go awry once on the water. We've all been there, so no pride here.

Keep us updated and post pics when you can (we love pictures!)

All the best,
David
