Is it a windsor? if so I believe it may be near the starter. Maybe even behind the starter.

Looks like your engine was made in 1969 and came out of a Ford Torino. Also, it came out of the general engine engineering Dept. as opposed to the their race division.

FYI The 1969 351W was the best year for that engine because it was most HP they could get out of it.

Found the #'s just where thehow33 suggested. On the block directly above the starter. Impossible to see without pulling the starter. I am going to send the #'s to H/M to see if they can tell if this is the original engine or not.

If it is an H/M Engine it should have a H/M tag riveted to it with the H/M engine S/N.

No tag on the block or heads, on one casting/freeze plug there is a small sticker that says Pioneer void if removed. Either it was rebuild or replaced along the line, it has late tin valve covers. If those two items were not present it looks to be original, so the mystery continues the answer from H/M will clear things up providing they logged manufacturers S#'s.

Thanks. I'll take a look after I get it out of the shop. I need to pull the starter anyway.

Added note the only stamped numbers we found were on the back of the left hand bank, hoping the stamped numbers will help H/M ID it.

That is not a serial number. That is a casting number. The same number can be found on thousands of engines. It only tells you that the engine was used in a 1969 Fairlane or Torino. If there is a serial number it would be stamped on the top of the narrow flat surface just ahead of the bellhousing.

This does not sound like the original Holman~Moody engine to me~
Sounds like Pioneer was an engine rebuiler~and that was their warranty tag!
The H-M engines usually have finned cast aluminum rocker covers & a Holman-Moody tag rivited on the engine!
Is there a H~M T-Bird tag on the outdrive or drive bellhousing?

Holman Moody placard on outdrive and bell housing. The Pioneer label is on a freeze out plug. Did H-M stamp the block anywhere?

The bell housing tag has to do with the original setup, that is a s far as that goes. The only definitive numbers are the one we found on the back left hand corner of the block, if they can be matched to either the original build or the re builder then we will know what is really there. I is very obvious it was apart and back together in recent times, how recent hard to tell as it was a F/W boat. The engine does have the 3 bolt crank pulley so it has an HO crank, quite a bit points toward an original H/M that has been done over. Found some water intrusion in the back two ports one left one right, I suspect the H/M manifolds, Paul needs to get things moved around then we can get to work and the heads/pan off to see whats what.
