Sorry Mike I have to ask.
I think I have read a hundred posts on a hundred boards about this and I still don’t have an answer.
Will a 454 Gen IV flywheel work on a 454 Gen V motor?
I know they will bolt up but some say they are balanced differently and will cause issues. What do you all think?

I believe one block is "internally" balanced and the other is "externally" balanced, but not sure which is which, I think the older block is internally balanced.
I had a 1969 396 (same block as 454) and I think it was internally balanced and did not need the weighted flywheel....so basically, to answer your question, yes, there are different flywheels for the 454...

It's a late model Gen IV. Some where around mid 80's if that helps and it is externally balanced.

The mark 396,402,427 were internally ballanced.the mark 4,gen 5 gen 6 454's from the factory are extrenally ballanced..Now if someone put a scat, eagle etc crankshaft in a 454 block then most machine shops will internally ballance the assenbly..all the factory flywheels for a 454 are the same unless someone fiddled with them..mark,gen flywheels will bolt up,its the small block ones that i was confuseing you with(2 piece vs 1 piece rear main seal)..

So just go with it and if it shakes out of the boat you will come to Maryland with a 40' trailer of left over shop things as gifts and to fix it? :kingme::kingme::kingme:

This is a '93 Mark IV 454 14" flywheel.
I would say this is definately externally balanced.

So if they viberate you want me to bring all of this over so we can swap out the goodies?

i suggest to have then checked with what you have or be safe and have everything ballanced..:)

I bet with that set up it would take and hour to build a couple 800hp BBC's and drop them in for me. What are you doing this weekend? :kingme:
The one I have is close but the weight looks like it may have been added on, Not sure and I'm at work. I'll have to show you a picture of it later.

Alright, here's mine. As I said it looks like the weight was added to the flywheel but if you still thing it's OK.....

If you compare it to mine, it's pretty apparent some of the weight on yours is in a different location than mine.

I cant tell where your bolts holes are but when you put them side by side....... even the numbers are in the same place???

The numbers should tell you what the flywheel is from and should be on......

If you look at the two smaller "lugs" on the flywheels, yours are smaller than mine and located in slightly different positions.

I haven't checked yet and Mr F's is a Gen 5 also. They look close but I will make sure tonight. Thanks for you help by the way.

My re-ring kit comes in on Monday. I would love to get the bottom end out of the way. With the flywheel being right :crossfing: I could even get the transmission on.
