What are some realistic/true (GPS) speeds for different engines in Sweet Sixteens.

4.3 L

5.0 L

350 Mag.

And what props are you running?

Also, are trim tabs worth the Money on a 16?

Thanks,

JEFF

I have a 1990 16 with a 4.3 and a 4 bbl carb. With only me in the boat, it goes 53 to 54 on gps. I don't have trim tabs on mine and don't really need them. I think if you get over 60 mph they are needed because of chine walk. Mine porpoises a little at slower speeds, but not enough to bother getting tabs in my opinion. There is a Donzi 16 on ebay right now with 18" trim tabs and 500 hp capable of over 80 mph and supposedly handles like an 18 footer which seems plausible, and it doesn't have any external hydraulic steering because, according to the owner, it steers great without it. I have a 22 pitch prop.

Was a few tenths over 81 (GPS'd) in my old 16... She didn't have tabs either...

Tabs; "necessary?" Probably not. "Nice to have?" Yes.

Worth it? Totally depends on your situation. In your home, what is considered an "impulse purchase" $$$ limit? $20? $50? $300? $1000? If you can easily make a $300 purchase, then I would personally say, "Yes, they are worth it."

Rootsy hit over 80 without them, so it can be done.

My first 18 had them. My second one didn't, and I added them. My current 16 project doesn't have them any more. There is evidence they were there at one point and I am going to add them.

They provide an additional degree of control over the ride that is nice to have.

Do you need tabs NO. but then again when you have friends aboard for an afternoon ride and one up chucks from rocking chair motion then yes. Are they any benefit is sloppy seas you bet they are, do without if you like to me it is just cheapness or macho not to have tabs on a 16. When I sold my 16 one of the very first questions I got from the knowledgeable buyer was does it have trim tabs, are the necessary go figure!

My '69 with no power trim or tabs, and the drive in the lowest position, gets 52 mph with only myself in the boat. Still have the original 302 h/m 235hp, and using a 19" blade. I've tried more pitch, but the old girl doesn't like that when we are at high elevation lakes here in CA. And, I am too cheap and lazy to have an assortment of propellers!

Mine has a 310 hp Volvo with a 290A Volvo outdrive (with trim). I'm told it will run 62 GPS.

I'll let you know next summer.

I had a 91 16 with a mildly worked 302 and a Cobra drive best was 57.9 GPS, tabs was the very best add on of all.

Mine 75 gps 1.32 gears alpha 25" 4 blade turbo, 415 sbc, 18" tabs solid mount. The tabs for me are to give additional hull surface when running fast, witch is most of the time. The boat is all apart getting ready for a blackhawk. Any guesses on the top speed of this combo?:nilly:

My best guess is FAST.
Has anyone done this before?
Sounds like it will be an action-packed setup...keep us posted!

My '03 16C w/tabs and a 5.0 mpi ran 62.0 on GPS. It's mostly stock. It has thru-hull and aluminum GLM exhaust manifolds/risers.

I am spinning a Turbo 1.... 21 or 22 pitch... I forget.

My best so far was 59 MPH (GPS) with a bad misfire on cylinder 1. I think I could get 61 or 62 out of her now with the pin in the top setting and a GPS with more the 20 seconds of battery life. :P I'll find out next year. (See specs below.) Also, no trim tabs, but I'll probably add them when I can afford to do so.
