One of the mounting studs broke off of my power steering pump so I looked online for a replacement. The Mercruiser version is almost $500!! Will a regular GM automotive pump work as a replacement? Anyone have this experience? It would be for a 502 Mag.

Thanks,
Joe

Is it the one at the top that screws into the tank, if so it is available at Chevy for about $8. I had mine break last year!!!

Phil

P.S. the automotive pump is the same animal!

Yes, that's the one! If I can just replace the stud that would be nice since the pump is fine. You don't happen to remember the Chevy p/n by chance?

Yep, I went through that w/the Minx.
FWIW, instead of ever buying a Merc marine rebuilt P/S pump, if you remove all these studs, the cartridge will come out the front of the reservoir and you can replace it w/most any rebuilt GM P/S pump.
And oh yeah.....those studs are metric.
Found out the hard way.

There is actually a standard and metric version depending on what type of pump you have. For anyone else looking for these studs:

3/8-16 UNC Stud GM Part#: 5689546
M10 -1.5 Stud GM Part#: 7831388

I had to get them online since my local dealer didn't have them but for three studs and shipping it was $20, a lot cheaper then a new pump! :)
