Hey folks,

Not only am I a Donzi newb, I'm also a newb to boating in general, so please bear with me as my questions will probably sound, um, newbish :o

I found a 67 Sweet 16 on Craigslist and I plan on taking a look at it tomorrow :shades:

1) It has a 302 Ford V8 and a Volvo outdrive.
Is this considered original equipment?

2) I've heard of Ford marine engines having a reverse rotation.
Is this true for all of them or just boats with twin motors?

3) How exactly is the outdrive connected to the motor?
Is there a clutch of some sort?

4) Are maintenance and wear item parts easy to find for these old boats?

5) Is there anything I should be overly concerned about when checking it out? (other than the basics like starting, running and floating)

6) Does anyone recognize this boat? (perhaps a member here?)

Nice looking boat w/ lots of original hardware including driver's seat and rear view mirror, wheel has been changed as has shifter.

302 probably not correct - would've been a 289.

Check which Volvo outdrive ie 200, 250, 270?

Volvo drives are LH rotation, hence the port helm.

Check the gas tank. Original one likely shot after 42 years - a PITA to replace.

Check for a hull number either behind dash or up forward on the inside of the stem.

Also not a Sweet 16. It is a Ski Sporter - Sweet 16 came much later.

Take some more pictures.

1) It has a 302 Ford V8 and a Volvo outdrive.
Is this considered original equipment?a 67 would be a 289 interceptor and a volvo aq 200 if it is a volvo 250 or higher it has been replaced looks to be the original risers post any serial numbers you can find on the top of the drive or on the bell housing

2) I've heard of Ford marine engines having a reverse rotation.
Is this true for all of them or just boats with twin motors? most are standard auto rotation but did have reverse rotation in v drive twin apps for counter rotating props the volvo can change prop rotation so the motor spins the same way as a car

3) How exactly is the outdrive connected to the motor?
Is there a clutch of some sort? usually a bell housing or intermediate housing

4) Are maintenance and wear item parts easy to find for these old boats?for the most part yes

5) Is there anything I should be overly concerned about when checking it out? (other than the basics like starting, running and floating)yes if it is the original tank it is failing or has failed already, coring soft spots on the deck and transom most 67 16s had no deck coring they were solid glass and pvc tubes for support that would be a good thing

6) Does anyone recognize this boat? (perhaps a member here?)no but a nice looking boat

Rick

hope that helps

Thanx Guys

On question #3, there is some sort of transmission, right?

Is it just a direct drive box that switches from Forward to Neutral to Reverse?

no the upper gear housing changes drive direction for nuetral, fwd and rev the intermediate has a pressure plate and has a shaft that always spins the upper attaches to that splined shaft so the upper always spins too

looking at the boat it looks to be a 67 but the drive is definetly not original 280-290 lower

no the pics are to small on this pc but even if it is a 250 it is not original the aq 200 did not have the blue tag to the best of my knowledge

OK, so without posting his asking price yet, what do you guys think it's worth as is?

He says it's turn key water ready with no leaks.

Rough question the market is so flaky. Right now most all are below their real value.

Price is what you are willing to pay, particularly on one this old. Some of the older boats are going for more than ones 20 years younger. Range is WIDE, between $5,000 and $15,000 at most for a stock one. Figure out what you want to pay and make an offer! :cool!:

Rick

a visual inspection is needed then you can figure what you want to pay , 42 year old foamed in steel tanks are past their life span if the tank is original it will need to be changed that means splitting the deck& hull not to mention if the boat has been exposed to e 10 so take that into consideration as well as hull condition the motor and drive are the easy part.

you must also know what you can do and what you'll pay for what you can't do

good luck :)

Excellent point, you can end up spending a truck load of money if you have to pull the deck to replace the gas tank, and likely will find other issues related to the hull when you do that. Get someone that really knows these boats to check it out before spending money, unless of course the price is so low that you can afford to take care of any and all problems! :cool!:

What is worth is what you are comfortable with.

Here's what I mean. I bought a 1967 Ski-Sporter that was running well and had been used previous seasons, and probably would have been used this season, had I not bought it. So it ran, just like the one you are looking at.
The tank, engine, and outdrive in my boat had been replaced in 1987, so I thought I would be in good shape there, and not have to pull off the deck, which you have to do to get the tank out.

But, the farther I looked, the more trouble I found, and I don't like things to be "wrong," like delaminated stringers with soaked, mildewed wood, and an engine leaking oil from seals, gaskets, and an oil pan that is pinholed through, so I ended up taking the deck off, replacing the stringers, recoring/rebuilding the L-lounge seat (which from the cracks in the fiberglass at the corner of this boat suggest the L-lounge in this boat could also need to be redone), etc.

But, if I weren't so particular, I could have bought the boat, and just enjoyed it, kept adding oil to the engine, and used it for probably many more seasons.

I paid $5,000 for mine.

You could probably buy this boat, and enjoy it, although the tank concern would bother me, as that is a real safety issue. It looks like it has been used recently.

This boat has been for sale for a while at the original asking price, which hasn't been reduced. This suggests the owner believes it is worth what he is asking, and is holding out to find a buyer who agrees with him.

If the boat is worth the asking price TO YOU, then buy the boat. As pointed out, it does have a lot of original equipment on it. But, as has also been pointed out, the market is very soft, and there have been several nicer boats that have sold this summer for less than the asking price of this boat, including some 18s.

If it were me, knowing what I know, I would offer him $5,000 and see what happens, unless he can prove the tank has been replaced. If this has been done, I would offer him $6,500.

Just my .02.

Snake,

well just re read your post, you might want to get a ride and maybe some wheel time in one first. the ski sporter can be handful sometimes to a seasoned driver, my point even if it is the right price and in mint shape is it still the boat for you???

What Bill said goes x 1000 for me..!!
My 1967 V-drive was under a grand.....
It ended like this:

http://picasaweb.google.com/audiogg/FinalTouchesAndSplash#5330339877678223666

And started like this:

http://picasaweb.google.com/audiogg/DonziInProgress#5316606389482459954

You will find that it is a great journey, with lots to learn, and spend money on, and get frustrated about, and lots to fall in love with.

This board rocks, and is a wealth of knowledge and support, and the day you splash it and start learning to drive it, you will love it even more!

Go for it!

OK, I took a look at it yesterday and it just wasn't as clean as I had hoped :frown:

Motor hadn't been started in 6 months and was soaking wet under the hood (is that normal??)

It had stress cracks EVERYWHERE and the seller wasn't sure if the fuel tank had been replaced or not

The battery was half dead and after few minutes of cranking, he brought out a battery charger and it fired up right away, settling down to a ice idle :shades:

The drive engaged fine, but had a bit of a whining gear sound to it :boggled: (normal?)

It's true and I know this is gunna sound stupid, but I got it as an investment :bonk:

I traded my Mitsubishi MiniCab for it straight up :cool!:

http://orlando.craigslist.org/cto/1411413996.html

I had bought that thing for $1000

http://www.fuelslut.net/ihost/files/123/mightymitz4wd2.JPG
http://www.fuelslut.net/ihost/files/123/mightymitz4wd4.JPG

Put about $500 worth of work into it (pulled a few dents, new turn signal lens, rubber bed bumpers, moondisc hubcaps, wiper blades, spray on bedliner kit, rear seats, spotlights, etc.), then made a $h!tload of YouTube videos having fun with it :shades:

http://www.fuelslut.net/ihost/files/123/minimitzzcreggz.JPG

http://www.fuelslut.net/ihost/files/123/minimitzmudding6.JPG
http://www.fuelslut.net/ihost/files/123/minimitzmudding10.JPG

So I basically paid $1500 for the boat :kingme:

After a bit of cleanup work (and some fun on the water), I'm sure I can get quite a return on it :pimp:

I would've probably went with the Donzi, but he wanted $2k on top of the trade and I had no plans on opening my wallet

The fuel tank issue and whining outdrive didn't sit well with me either :garfield:
