1996 22 Classic: Metal or Plastic Gas Tank?

Would a 1996 22 Classic come stock with a metal or plastic gas tank? Which is preferable?

Neoprene by that year and preferable, though the metal tanks seem to last about 30-35 years.

I think there're examples of both as late as 2000.
Plastic is preforable.

I'm embarrassed to ask, but how can you tell which is which?

Pull up the deck storage locker then unscrew the tank access plate you can see the top of the tank.

The tank in my '99 22 is plastic.
