Hello, I also own a Chris Craft XK-19 which I have restored. Chevy 350 ci, 290 hp, Volvo 270 outdrive. The original steering system required constant heavy pressure on the wheel at higher rpms. I put in a Teleflex SS151, No Feed Back, rack and pinion system, which resolved the constant pressure problem. It hold steady wherever you put the wheel, even in a turn. But, it requires two hands to turn the wheel at higher rpm (above 3000) - higher rpm, more force needed. Any suggestions from the forum? Different steering sysytem suggestions?

Thanks

Thanks for the reply. It's hard in both directions. Drive and gimbel are good - had everything rebuilt during restoration. Prop is a 15x19, considered the right size by most XK-19 folks. Tried 14x21 and 14x19 prior to changing the steering sysytem - at that point all of the props reacted the same. Any other thoughts?

The trim pin is in the outermost hole, with the intent of lifting the bow out of the water more on plane. I have given consideration to using the middle hole (there are only 3 holes), but have not done so yet.

My friend has the same boat with the same problem.
After converting to external hydraulic steering the problem is gone.
Hopefully you can get it to work with what you have.

More pics of your boat please!

Jeff

Thank you, HallJ, for the response. Not pleased to hear about others with the same issue! Nevertheless, you asked for pictures, so here are a few more.

Oops! Sorry, the previous Chrysler engine picture was not mine! I have a Chevy big block (454) overbored by .060 with a modified cam. Here is a picture of this one for you, Jeff. The jet pump is the stock Jacizzi WJ that is original to the boat with all new bearings, etc.
