I have a 1990 16' with a 4.3l 4 bbl engine. The outdrive has a plate on it that says 5.7 litre. Is this a heavier outdrive than would have come on the boat or is this normal with omc's? Also would this drive have clutch dogs or would it have a cone clutch? Just curious as I've only owned the boat for a couple of months.

most, if not all 5.7's used the 1.47 gears, and the 4.3 used the 1.65 gears... if you have a 4.3 with the 1.47 gears you probably have a very small pitch prop to contend with..

The prop is a 22 and the boat runs 53 gps at 4600 rpms. Thats with just me in it.

then you have the HD 1.65/5.7 drive, which is good news, they used that on heavy hull V8 twins.. the std duty gear 5.7 drive was a 1.47 which held up almost as well

the 4.3/1.65 LD geared units broke easily behind a V8, oh boy do I know that one..

Thanks. So if I decide to up my HP this outdrive should be able to take it? Any idea on the clutch type, or did they use both types on the 5.7 HD?
