View Full Version : What's involved when switching from King to Bravo?

I was wondering what would be involved in switching from a King Cobra to a Bravo outdrive. I know the King is a superior drive  but I think prospective buyers are afraid the King will break and be hard to fix. I figure I could sell off the King since it's in perfect running condition and possibly break even (minus my labor) on a Bravo. This will also make it easier to add the much needed hydraulic steering. I see a 22zx or 28zx in my near future so I don't want to spend a ton of money on the boat and then have to price it out of the ball park.

Are there any Bravos that can handle almost 700 HP the way my King does?

I appreciate any suggestions, thanks!

I thought I heard the transom cut out was basicly the same, I'm not sure though.

I did the switch-the Bravo is a direct bolt on! By the way, my King Cobra did have hydralic steering. I don't think I have pics-I'll check.

Good to know, thanks! Looks like I'll have a nice winter project to do. Now to find an affordable Bravo assembly.

IMO hunt for another "reliable" King! Much better drive all the way around!

Wouldn't you need a Bravo XR or something similar to handle 700 ponies?

I think a XR is only good for 600 hp. Maybe I need a #6 :bonk:

Or a Konrad, I am impressed.

I don't think the King was actually rated for 700 either.

Your boat is an 87 right? it should have come with an Alpha 1 from the factory, so going to a Bravo should be easy. plus you should have the raised X that the 87 Alpha boats had. So... you have a rocket ship.

Well have fun with this project, but do not be surprised if it does not live up to every one elses expectations.
