View Full Version : Why is my Power Steering Fluid Foaming Up?

My steering started getting just a little stiff today so I checked the fluid and it was full but was foamed up. I'm thinking about trying changing the fluid. Any ideas what the problem could be?

Do you use ATF or power steering fluid?

The service manuals say to use either. I've been using ATF since i always have that around. Should I switch to PS fluid?

check for leaks. foam = air = leak in the system.

Did you check if it's low...I know, that's probably a silly question.
Some ATF's have better anti foaming additives than others.
Bob has a point also.

I was told to flush the system and only use hydraulic oil.

You must have a leak....

I will climb in there and check it over. I'm changing the drive oil now too.

You need a full synthetic power steering fluid from Redline, Amsoil, Royal Purple. Don't use ATF either, get power steering specific fluid.

Used to have this problem with race cars. Redline PS fluid is my preference.

My logic is also based on assumption that it is a new issue... plus knowing there is a new engine and all that stuff was touched and or swapped out.

carl,

Nobody carries synthetic power steering fluid in our area, i've tried finding it. I had an Amsoil dealer order it for me, its about $7 a quart. Although I didn't ck S&G, for Redline.

There are no leaks at all. The fluid was not hot. It's the first time this has happened and the reservoir looked full. I topped it off and will see what happens next time out.

Someone suggested that it could be the P/S cooler. (I think!)
