My son is looking for his first boat - he wants a Boston Whaler for lake fishing and just running around with friends. I came across this. I haven't seen it in person yet but any opinions on the boat and price?

Small Whalers are something I search for online quite frequently. That boat seems like it's worth a look and the price is very competitive with what others are listed for. Very cool boat to have for fishing, swimming off of, whatever he needs it for.

Good luck RD.

This whaler is a must see. This boat can be a Tender to a Yacht or Sport fish boat. Or it can be used as a nice little flats boat.
It has everything you could want in a small boat. Large dry storage area, 100+ quart built in insulated cooler.
Light weight Divinycell core fiberglass decks. 18 gal gas tank under the console, Varnished teak steering pod and Aluminum
steering wheel and controls. Helms seat thats lifts up and houses a fold out Bimini top, two batteries and a day cooler.
The console houses a AM FM CD player, a Depth finder and a VHF marine radio. Two live wells aft and all the pluming and pumps.
You really have to see this to appreciate it. I have a lot of time and money in this boat that far exceeds what I am asking for it.
You will not find another one like it.

So far the one you found is the best deal IMO.. While I thought your son was a tad older I wasn't sure, guess you can nix the throttle stop stuff :) :)

Is the one I posted a Montauk?

When I sent him the link, he replied that he had previously decided to hold off on getting one. After seeing the ad, he may be changing his mind.

He is returning home this weekend from a 7 month engineering co-op / intern job with a big bank account saved up. My goal is to get him to spend some of it - I need access to a fish boat after all. Plus he is on full scholarship at UT and I pay his rent / etc...

So.....anybody wanna trade a 13 or 15 for a retro looking Triumph? I haven't ridden the thing 100 miles this year and I could use a little gunkhole boat for the delta...

Well, true there are the bozo's who think it's cool to go 2 mph faster with a v4 on the back and the transom 2" deeper..
All the while consuming twice the fuel..

guess that makes me a bozo

my '79 montauk with a 115 on a CMC hydraulic jackplate flies! I havent got it on GPS yet, but I believe it runs mid 50s. :) I moved the battery and oil tank under the console and have lost a small amount of storage as a result, but it sits just fine in the water...

It is incredibly stable and it burns considerably less fuel than the Cigarette. :)

LOL, there's one in every bunch.. For the intended purposes stated here I think the 90 is the perfect combo. Since he is fishing it, not bar hopping ;) , the storage space you sacrificed to put the v4 on it becomes more important.... And if you think the v4 is economical, you haven't run a Yammie 90...
Plus which dear ole Dad will loan him the Donzi when he wants to go fast :D :D

nothing wrong with a Yammy 90...if you're old... LOL My 115 is a 2003 model year Johnson which is the same as the 90. I would guess that the Yamaha would be more economical.

I fish my boat...got lot's o fish guts in it to prove it too...I just get to the fishin hole quicker than most :)

Sorry MP, another vote for the Montauk w/120hp here. :D Step-dad had to rig it himself because Hi-Lift didn't want the liability; this was early '80s. I seem to recall the trips down to Elliott, from Pelican Harbor, not taking all that long. :D But the 13' with a 40hp is perfect; 15' w/70hp should be decent.

But that 15' posted originally is probably heavier than the original, and the 60hp will probably feel like a dog. But it seems fairly priced.

Redog,

The first boat you posted was given to me by my father back in 1996 when I was 13 years old. That is a 15' dauntless and it is an excellent boat. We kept it in the family until 1 year ago as we ran out of use for it. It rides very well but a set of bennett 9x12 tabs improves the ride incredibly. Just to give you an indication we sold our 96' with a 2007 90 yammi for 13.5k last year. I would give that boat a shot.

Don't mean to be obnoxious at all, but I believe the Whaler spec (in the late '70s or early '80s) for a Montauk 17 with a 90HP was 38 mph. So, I'm guessing with a 115 maybe you could get up to the low-mid 40s at best. But I have trouble imagining mid 50s under any circumstances with only a 115. I could be wrong, but I suspect it just seems fast with a boat that light, small, and low. Dunno what the jackplate will change either, I openly admit. IF something does actually get it up to the mid 50s, I'm extremely eager to understand what makes such a difference.

Regards,

Mike

No No No on the newer bigger stuff! The Whaler is THE way to go. Put him in an old 13 to start with. It will be the best times he will ever have. Been there done that..

He has a point. My Whaler repeatedly knocked the tops off of women waterskiiers, like magic. The Cobalt never did that.

personally I wouldn't go with the southern built whalers. stick with the original northern boats.
