If you go 540 and shoot for 500HP you should have a reliable upper 70's 22.

I rode in Toms 22 with a 383 small block and it went 65mph, I think a good reliable 540 will easily meet your goals and then some.

Your opening a can of worms here. Every one has options. First with a 502 low deck the 540 is slightly different then the tall block versions. As for durability it doesn't matter if you go 540 or 502. Just the HP and combination of parts used. In the end it is how fast do you really NEED to go. So go there first then reverse engineer. If you don't bore more then 0.030, your fine. I am in in a different position then most because I use to do this for a living. What I will say is between 8.5 and 9.5 on compression forged rods and pistons roller assembly on the cam and rockers. Cam I won't go there because I set my stuff different then others. I run tight lobe centers others run up to 114 lobe centers. On this get others opinions.

That is one sweet looking small block, that would get a 22 going and keep the handling nice.

an easy way to do it (or at least a good place to start) is to match Mercury Racing HP 500 specs. The only thing I'd personally change is bump the compression up to run on premium gas and reduce the cam some. That would net longer periods between rebuilds.

Although, reliable means different things to different people. 200 hours is reliable to some because they only use the boat 20-30 h ours a year. To others, 200 hours is a drop in the bucket. It's pretty well documented that the Merc HP 500 needs a new top end after 200 hours. That's what I'm basing this on.

Or his Cig 20... Sorry we did not make the AOTH run we are just finishing up the 20 up last week because we changed somethings around on it and just waiting for our hatch to come back from paint. first run out of the box was 100+ @ 5800 rpm

I am thinking about doing the Cig 20' poker run Oct 2 - 4

Nice looking package you are putting together.

If you have a 502 block and want to use it, you should use a 540 crank and take advantage of the free hp. If all you want is high 70's, you can back off the CR or bump stick and build a package that will really last.

If everything goes right, Jill and I will be at the Cig run in our rehabbed 22. Pretty sure several others from the Midwest Donzi Club will be there too. Look forward to seeing your's run with, or it sounds like, ahead of the bunch!

And of course, there is always next years's AOTH! We'll save a spot for ya!

500hp out of a 540 is VERY mild. Shoot for a little more. :D

I agree... a mild 540 should make 700+ easily and run on 87 octane and be just as, if not more reliable than any merc power.

Keep the 502 for max reliability, get some AFR heads, 10:1 compression with the aluminum heads will let you use 89 gas, maybe even 87. Good exhaust, a full roller valve train with a milder 731 type cam and you will make your goal with a very reliable deal.

to chase in October. Kind of like the dog at the corner running after car tires. Oh well, I enjoy it. Congrats on the big number, I can't wait to see it run.

Rick,
That is about as nice and wild, completely radical, and beautiful 20 I will probably ever see. You did a masterful job on the concept that I have to figure was your design. Highly cool - Bill
