Low water pickup ?

I am running an Alpha SS on my 18c and I want to install a sea water pump on it while I have the engine out. I was wondering if I could remove the drive impeller and use the drive as the pickup. I am concerned that a transom mounted pick up will disrupt the water around the prop because of the high X on the SS.

Just an observation, most transom pickups that I have seen are mounted just outboard of the stringer. I would doubt very much if it will disturb the prop, IMO I would remove the pump and leave the drive pick alone so water can rush through to help to keep the drive cool.
