I liked that one too--some folks offered up commentary here as well.

20 more feet the boat would have floated right off. We had that exact same whaler as kids for our first boat, good choice cause that thing was tough and yes "un-sinkable" .....

Wait a minute, don't be so harsh.

I was always told keep going until the trailer tire is under water.

He just didn't hear the back it in part :bonk:

He's already succeeded in getting the boat onto the the trailer and back out of the water. 20 more feet and his truck will start drying out as he drives home...

Ahhhh, I didn't know he was done for the day, one cooler full of fish, one cooler empty of beer (obviously) :wrench: Okay, you can pull the drain plug now.

We still have a couple of these early 17's in the blue interior and Mahogany around here as well. Early seventies I believe.

My personal 17 "Montauk" style favorite was the "Newport" version of this boat. http://images.traderonline.com//img/6/dealer/1063771//94927884_1thumb_550x410.jpg

just when you think you have got the terror of the boat ramp past you , you've got the boat off and are ready to pull away

THIS HAPPENS

My personal 17 "Montauk" style favorite was the "Newport" version of this boat.

Montauks and Sakonnets were always harder to tell apart. The shelf-seat sports ""Currituck?" and the side-console Newports were easier to spot. Ours was a Sakonnet without the bow platform but with the full stern seat, bow seat on the front of the console, and the big reversible captain's seat. Seats for 7 close friends and lots of storage for a Whaler.

But lots of varnish for anybody. An all-glass one from a few years later would have been a lot less work. I took it to bare wood and refinished every square inch of it myself when I was in college. Never again.

I did find a few I'd never seen before here:

canal neighbor of mine when I was a teen had a 16 Currituck with a 125 (?) 'Rude,...1967-69ish... I think it came new with a 100 small gearcase, then he got a 125 big gearcase when that came out... my God what fun that boat was... we slid the console back as far as we could.... another neighbor's dad owned the local Whaler store, Fisherman's Paradise, I think this package came from there, but he himself had a 17 (?) Woodson tri-hull side console with a V4 60 or an 80 small gearcase 'Rude that ran great... next door neighbor had a 13 with a pull start 65 Merc that he raced (porpoised) in the Pelican Harbor round the islands race, as well as a 17 Champ they had... good days back then to grow up and live on the water...

Wow, I'd have loved to try a ride in the 125HP 16 or the 65HP 13, either one. Never saw either of those with that much juice. (We thought we were doing well with our 100 Johnson.)

I always thought this was an interesting Whaler--seen some but never been aboard. The wacky version with the textured sides was interesting too. With a single 200 Whaler listed 52MPH top end as spec. Sure, not much in Donzi terms, but about as fast a stock whaler as ever I think.

the 16 or was it really a 17?/125 was fun fun fun fun, but sucked fuel...... I think it had one of those Tempo 30 gal tanks under the seat... another neighbor behind me here had a late 80's Tempest with a pair of 200 Yammi's when I moved here 20 years ago, but he and the boat is longgg gone, always wanted to ride in one of those..

Ghost, I had an 11 Super Sport Whaler with a 3 cyl 50 HP Merc. THAT was fun :D

Also a Montauk 17 CC as well.

Anyways, I used to run to the USA when I was 21-ish in the 11" SS when we had a Canadian "Beer strike" here and I would go buy "102" out of Roche Harbour (USA, San Juans) and drive it back to a local beach here.

As Buizilla said, those were the days

Used to run from Victoria to Vancouver in it. Many times. Try and get on plane, stand up, step over the middle seat, let her settle down, then .... GO...

Coming off plane was interesting. :bonk:

I know LOTS of folks that won't take a 30 footer and do that run ...

ok, so that's what happened :bonk:

:D
