Anyone know of a a good painter in the Lake George, NY area. I want to paint a red 1996 donzi 22 classic. Tired of buffing endlessly. Looking keep the red and do it over the winter.

Anyone have any experience with anyone around here?

Thanks

The guy who did mine did a good job, but in the FL keys. drag it down during winter then pick it up for the Miami boat show run!

My uncle is on Cleverdale and had his red 2000 22 Classic repainted last year, came out beautifully. I'll contact him and get the guys info, stay tuned.

22 went to Mac the Knife today for a paint job. Towed it down in a snow storm. Looking forward to it. Will have a good 3 months for cure time (per his recommendation)

What are you having it shot with?

PPG then clearcoat

PPG then clearcoat

PPG did a study for Donzi to make the painting better. It might be worth a call to see what they use exactly.

Either way, good luck, there is nothing like fresh paint

PPG has an article about Donzi and the move to them. Basically 2006 they changed all kinds of stuff and after that time they had no more warranty claims for paint issues...

It is in this pdf doc. good read

There is not much/any derig. I am having him remove the tabs completely, fill the holes and paint over them as if they were never there. Then I can replace with anything in the future.

How did it all turn out ?

Thanks for asking.

It turned out great, the bill was higher than expected because I asked for some extra things like strip and paint the drive, remove the tabs, fill the holes, prime and paint, buff out everything else that was not painted, add and extra layer of clear coat, paint the narrow stripe instead of vinyl, a few others, Donzi stickers and matching numbers, etc. I am happy. It will really take 3-5 years until I am am really happy if/when not buffing. It really does look new. I was impressed when I first walked in the shop and saw it. Now it is sitting, unwaxed, curing for a month or two before she goes in. Will post some before-after pictures when I can.

The boat was red gel which is the worst color for chaulking. That is why i did it. The paint is red too but with heavy UV protectants. We'll see....

Now I just have to get her running again for spring...

He scanned the original color under a sticker and buffed so it had not faded and was original as possible.

In five years I will know if it was worth it but it looks great now. New tabs working well.

if it were me, I would think it is worth it now- that boat looks new!!!

But I KNOW WHAT YOU MEAN-- DURABILITY OF THE PAINT AND WHAT WILL THE FADE RATE BE.

The new Tabs look a little bigger (longer?) --did you change # of pumps from one to two?

Pismo
06-13-2010, 10:22 AM
Primer, then two coats of red PPG and then two coats of clear coat. I used the original trim master pump with the new tabs. Mainly because I like the two post controls that are just under my fingertips. I can keep my hands on the wheel and I am used to it. I could have cut and spliced etc the new pump into the old switch but the pump is fine and faster with single ram.

That article on PPG was pretty interesting, especially the comment of base gel then paint process. Wish they had more info on that. Pismo, boat looks really good, I'm sold on red for my project now. Went back and forth a bunch between yellow and red but red it is. What actual PPG color code did you end up going with?

He gave me the leftover in a can with the code sticker on it so I should be able to find out exactly what it is.
