So my son Jake and I drove up island to Port Alberni today and picked up our new project, a 1957 Willys CJ5.........

Personally, I think this towing the Donzi down to the local boat ramp will be cool.........

Needs some work but I have some good connections and I have done a few Jeep restorations in the past.

Now that it is home I will strip it down to the frame and see what I have to work with, a lot of it looks good and some is sad...........

Wish me luck.........:crossfing:

BTW. Anybody know if and or what 4 speed trannie will replace the existing 3 speed? It is a 4 banger 2.5L I believe, Iron Duke...???

So, you think the engine has already been replaced once?
BTW, great find.

I think I was on crack........:nilly: The Iron Duke was a set up my brother and I were talking about in a different application earlier today.

The engine in this 1957 CJ5 is the original Hurricane F-4 134 2.2L..........it is a whole 75HP...........:eek::yes:

Not sure what 4 speed trannie will marry up with it...? third gear on the highway is brutal.......:garfield:

My BIL had a '90 or so....it had some GM based drive train w/about 2.5L and a 4 speed......it would cruise @ about 70 but not comfortably.

I thought the F134 was a flat head?

Jeremy, look for a T-18 four speed. VERY strong, many made for Ford and Jeep, readily available. Check Nova Industries for an adapter if needed.

John, restorer of Jeeps and Bronco's.

BTW, currently looking for my next project as the Bronco finishes up. A little something called a Jeep FC.......hard to find in restorable shape, but I have a couple of candidates......

Hey WTH, ya think you might post a pics of the resto progress or something? I mean hell, you have TONS of free time to post at 2AM whilst rocking the twins back to sleep one at a time..

Hey, at 2:00 AM, I have a baby (babies)in my hands, usually some barf on me, and a bottle somewhere, hang on, where did that bottle go? Oh, I am sitting on it and that is why my ass is wet. Brooks, calm your ass down, you can eat after I am done feeding your sister. Now where was I? Oh yeah, I need two hands to post a pic, but only one to surf!!!

Bronco body is still at the body shop. Hoping to get it back soon. Donzi glass will be done in August. Pinzgauer is running like a champ, been working on it all last week. We are riding a 4th parade with the kids next Sat in it. It doesn't need a frame off, mech great, just needs some paint and a few minor things.....

Jim, so you like the FC's (Forward Control) Jeeps? Been on my list for a long time, especailly after I did my last CJ-5. I am thinking a T-18 tranny coupled to a 360 or a 390. Was never big on the 350 Cevy swap for Jeeps. The 304, 360, 390 and 401 could be made to go just fine with a little tuning.....Full frame off. I can't decide between the 150 and 170. 170 is longer and more functional, 150 is just plain cute........

Buddy had one, it was a blast to drive...........

Fogducker a 4 speed won't change the final drive ratio both will still be 1 to 1. What you need to find is a warn overdrive. That will give you a 25% overdrive. The axles on those old CJ's are geared really low. My guessit has 5.38 gears in it. Top speed is around 50 to 55 if I am guessing right. DW is right on if you want to swap in a 4 speed a T18 is a great choice. The older version is the T98 if I remember correctly. They can be found in newer CJ's than yours. Tough to come buy in the Jeep factory style. But a ford truck transmission can be adapted. Novak Adapters makes some great stuff. But I think there a couple of guys up by you that make quite a bit of stuff as well. Chris Waterman seems to stick in my head for some reason. Your brother most likely will know them. They had a willy's with an isuzu diesel in it.

That should be a great project. Love the old Jeeps.

THOSE are cool!!!

Thanks for the heads up on the trannie John, I am making a wish list as we speak....this is going to be a fun restore, I bought this for my son for his 12th birthday, told him he has to help with the resto and we should be done when he gets his license in 4 years............:yes: One condition though, if it is finished before his 16th birthday, I get to use it until then....

Oh and by the way I don't think that is a CJ5. Looks to me like it is the military version of the CJ5. M38A1 which is an even cooler find.

Looks like a fun project, especially for a father\son team. Once he sees all the work that goes into it, I bet he'll take better care of it once it's his.

I'm not much of a truck person, but need something to tow the boat with. I love CJ-7s and 5s....Just not a good tow vehicle due to the wheelbase. I can't imagine the tow rating is sufficient to pull more than an empty jet ski trailer.....

Thanks man, all good info. So you think I need the Warn overdrive as well as a T18 or similar? Your right, top speed is about 50, and scary!!!:garfield:

I will be starting to tear into her later this weekend, I have to look at upgrading the steering and brakes to power, the rest will stay stock. The motor appears good and should just need a refresh....:crossfing:

I will have to change the tires as well, I have been told these in the rain are like being on an ice rink....:nilly:

Thanks for all the interest.

Jeremy, what I think CJ is taling about is a overdrive that mounts between the transmission and transfer case. Think about a second transmission with one gear, overdrive.

Here is the link to Novak. Used them before, great source for tranny adapters....

http://www.novak-adapt.com

Definetly a M38A1. Be careful, some of the later M38A1's were 24 volt (more compatable for jump starting off other military vehicles like the duece and a half). Any thing 12 volt electric won't last long......:)

Attached is a pic of a M38A1. I say restore it like that, you kid will love it!!!

No, I think the warn overdrive goes on the output of the transfercase. Very old school piece.

Cool project! I never thought about using this 1964 88" Land Rover that I restored a few years ago as a tow vehicle. With only 75HP and the short wheel base, I was worried about just driving it over 45MPH. The friend that I bought it from used to occasionally tow his 16' Donzi with it back in the late 60s, though. I'm pretty sure my first boat had a 225 Buick. 1972 John Almand with a stringer drive

Never seen one like that, but sounds cool and will definetly work on the rear axle when in 2 wheel drive..

I have looked at the ones that go between the tranny and transfer case so both axles can take advantage of the overdrive for my Bronco. It has a 3 spd currently and I am looking at a T-18 or NP435 for it.

Donziweasel

I would wonder what the advantage is since you don't go down the highway in 4wd in these vehicles?

You do out here.....

Actually, from November to April, you go pretty much everywhere in 4wd. CJ and Broncos with the Dana 20's and up can run in 4wd at 55 mph easily. Nice to have a taller gear if you have the power.

CJ's and my overdrives do the same thing, just one is mounted on the output of the rear axle behind the transfer case and the other is in between the transmission and transfer case.

Borg-warner, gear vendor, etc... make them....

Cool project! My dad bought me a 73 vette when I was 14 ;) It still sits unfinished! Instead he found a 76 vette that just needed a bit of a cleanup vs a full blown resto! I still have it 17 years later and just had it painted.

I redid a 76 CJ5 last fall. I made it more of a woods truck vs a original resto. Here's a before and after..

Heres the manual on the warn overdrive. It mounts on the output side of the Dana 18 transfercase. Not the rear output to the rear axle. Never seen one in person but it works in 2 wheel drive and 4 wheel drive I believe. But it keeps the driveline short.

I've got a '78 CJ7 sitting in the barn waiting for restoration (i bought in new in Dec. 1977). i think it would be great to pull up to the ramp in the '78 CJ pulling the '78 X-18.

I was just about to order a new tub from the US, by the time it got to my door I wouldn't see change from $5000.........:boggled:

I was thinking about it for a couple of days and finally bit the bullet and was ready to phone and order the next morning. All I needed was the tub, the fenders, hood and windshield etc were salvagable but would take work to restore...........

I get an email out of the blue from a young guy who frequents my younger brother's web site www.island4x4.com (http://www.island4x4.com)

He asks me if I was looking for some Willys parts...I asked him where he lived and drove over there, 20 minutes away....

I got a "virgin" tub, hood and fenders as well as an original steering wheel with the colum and outside shaft, mounting plates for the front disc brake conversion as well as other misc parts........ALL for less than a THIRD of the price of the tub alone!!!!

I am one happy camper, I started taking her apart last night and will remove the engine, trannie and tranfer case, rebuild those and then with everything off the frame, do the frame, suspension and brake upgrade, check all the axle bearings etc, diffs and clean her up. Replace rebuilt engine, trannie and transfer case, I am sticking with original and will just install the Warn overdrive, talked to a few guys and the 3 speed around here for what I am doing is fine....once the drivetrain is in I can install the body and then paint, what do you think of white with a teal stripe down the middle...?

I am going boating now...........Happy Forth of July neighbours.....
