View Full Version : Magazine Test - Clamp-On Mufflers

The local fuzz is giving me a hard time for making too much noise on Lake Oakland. I'm going to need to look into mufflers. Just recently I read an article testing and comparing clamp-on mufflers in one of my magazines. I've gone through my piles of mags over and over and I can't find it. Does anyone else remember seeing this article?

TIA, I may not be able to reply right away, heading for the airport in an hour.......

And you didn't see this coming what with all the 'love notes' in the past?

Any notes left on your windshield?

Livorsi has mufflers!

I dont have the artical. But with that engine I would go with pneumatic operated one or the CMI self opening they have no performance loss and you don't forget to open them.

Why not just use turn downs that put the exhaust underwater at idle?

Must be irritating to be perfect in a world of mere mortals...

Thanks for the replies. After digging through piles of mags I found the clamp-on muffler shoot out in the 3-'09 Trailer Boats. The Gibson Power Tips look like what I need and are a great deal at $325 a pair. They are on the way:). I'll still let it roar on the big lakes though. Also I will need to cut my slant cut tips into straight cut tips.

After reading their addy i would call them if you havnt already:)

Gibson Marine has recently added a new silencer to the already large Marine line. These silencers were specifically designed for smaller displacement motors such as 350 Magnum, 454, 460, 455, 496, 496HO, and the 6.2L.

I ordered the ones you described. Are you saying there is a new muffler for larger motors? BTW, I don't know why they call 496 "smaller displacement".

i would be worried about reversion with that huge cam thats in the 525 motor,i would do some research first after reading what they wrote.i give me the feeling those tips are for lower hp motors and 425 hp may be the limit.

Carl...you do not want the Gibson Silencers they slide in your pipe that you have now and have too much back pressure. The Bullet or Turn down are the ones for larger engines. I think both are rated to 1200 HP. I have both on my boat and could not be happier with it!!

I called Teague to order the CMI mufflers and they told me that these were the ones to buy. I did some checking and they are much cheaper and really good quality.

This is what Trailer Boats said about them (they did test them on a 350 Baja though). The CMIs are the best because they pop open at higher speed but they are $1,300 and I don't plan on using these things very much. I doubt turn downs will pass the decibel test and I need clamp ons. I also still want the open exhaust sound on the big lakes. There is no sweeter music;). Even if the Gibsons cost me a couple of mph they seem like a good deal.

Silverback, I read all of your links and the bullet mufflers do look like the best ones for me. I can't get anyone on the phone right now to check the price but they look like they are a lot more expensive. Will the cheaper power tips cause any problems? I will pop them off for a quick race, then back on before the cops show up.........Sorry guys, but that's what I will do:yes:.

OK, thanks guys. Disregard the previous two posts.

I changed my order to the "bullets" for $585 incl. shipping. It's still a good deal. N2O, No need for secrets now, they will stay on on the smaller lakes. You guys rock, what would I do with out y'all?

Now back to mowing the lawn......

Hopefully that gets the coppers off your back. I bet they harass you again and you'll have to point them out! LOL

They are fugly aren't they? BH, I'll be stowing a tape measure. Sound test must be 3' away @ idle. They should easily pass Michigan's 90 db max.

Tape measure and video camera. :D

Make sure they aren't right behind your exhaust too. 4-5 feet off the waterline if I remember correctly.
