OK, I haven't completed either one of these two projects yet - well, the dash is done, but I'm planning to add one on the side and maybe a wood bit here or there, so not really complete. And, I finished the steering wheel trim tabs switch, but haven't installed it yet. Before I did, I got this idea and started working on a wood trim switch to better match my new wheel. I'm trying to get a more integrated look, like the steering wheel switches on a lot of modern cars.

I still have work to do on this, as you can see, but I think I am far enough along to prove the concept. I started by reworking my remote control circuit board, eliminating an extra board that I had used to mount the tactile switches, and instead mounted the switches and a few needed diodes directly to the remote board. Next, I fabricated some new switch rockers much like the original ones. I designed and fabricated a case out of mahogany using my computer-controlled router. I have a little work to do to fine-tune this, but I'm close. I have not yet fabricated the back for this case, but it will be simply cut from a sheet of fiberglass or plastic. The case will be fastened onto the steering wheel arm as shown, and when finished should match the wheel.

The end result will be trim tab switches on the wheel, much like cruise or radio switches on a car steering wheel, looking as integrated as possible.
