So been havin a great weekend with my 22zx. Went on a late day cruise and encountered a problem. Boat was runnin great. I was doin about 35-45 and all of a sudden the drive let loose. Felt like the prop was just spinnin or something with linkage between engine and outdrive is slippin. I limped home and can run her at 2000 rpm, but when i accelerate, the engine starts reving and I'm dead in the water. She pulls at low rpm, but then lets go when i put any strain on the drive. HELP.... Checked the throttle linkage for loose nuts, but found nothin. What do I need to check, any help on how to troubleshoot....help....please...THANKS!!!

Sounds like a drive coupler. Do you smell any rubber?

Mine let go all of a sudden, no rubber smell and NO forward motion, took all the splines out of it. Zero power transfer.
You have some forward motion so I am thinking the rubber is only 95% shot.

does it slip in reverse?

Didn't smell anything and seems to be fine in reverse, but then again, I'm not pushin rpm's goin backward which is where my problem kicks in.

Hope for the hub in the prop slipping, the other two can be $$!

Take the prop off inspect the back side for curled rubber!!

Your worst nightmare! The prop is the simplest and cheapest!!! Coupler and shift cone are Xpensive!!!!

Is there anything i can do to test the prop with it on the drive and the boat in the water? Don't have my truck at the lake so no easy way to get it on the trailer.

what's your point about slippage in reverse? I can test pushin the rpm's going backward tomorrow...:boggled:

THANKS!

Scratch aligned marks on the drive housing and the prop hub. If the hub slips, the scratches won't be aligned anymore.

Without the load of passengers she'll stay engaged to 4000 rpm up from yesterdays loaded out max of 2000.

I vote for prop slipping :anchor:go to a beach and pull that sucker off.If you dont have a prop wrench buy a cheap one at west marine.

Sounds like prop slip to me too - you might have lucked out.

I bet 4000 in reverse was fun...

Turn the boat around drive to the dock and pull the prop, it will need to be re hubbed!

Glad you are up and running, but I do believe your prop guy blew a little fragrance your way. Never heard of horse power rated hubs!!!!

Wouldn't doubt it...but i guess they are all "heavy duty" compared with a melted one.....quick turnaround was impressive all by itself!

It is a regular 1" shaft bravo thing. I think that he was blowing a little smoke too though. They have a plastic hub. I thought that it went to something like 425 or 500 hp and the other hub (Maybe bronze) that is above that level. I think I have a few laying around.

I am going to rubber hubs. They dampen vibration and are supposed to make Bravo drives live longer. I put one on the 26 and I can feel the difference when I shift.

XR hubs are all the same (except the rubber hubs).

I got my rubber hubs from Grizz. He can articulate the whole thing much better than me but it made pretty good sense when he explained it to me.

Tex and I have both pushed the rubber hubs to greater than 90 mph.

Definitely pushed me out of the hole quicker than the old one, but she has a lil more wobble at speed. Figure that will smooth out with some heat. Took a couple of days off to play on the water and just glad to be back in the game!

I too hate solid hubs even though they are suppose to be fine on Bravo's, you are 100% right on feeling the difference when you put it in gear. Solid hubs are deadly on Alphas, will take the clutch dogs way early.

I wonder why they do them if they can make flexible hubs that stand up to the hp. I dunno, maybe I have spent too much time in the bilge snorting glass dust and gas fumes. :nilly::nilly: and I was telling some friends that my hobby is better for you than hanging out in a bar and partying all the time. Maybe I am wrong!:hangum:
