I found a project. It's a 1970 18' 2+3 that needs a good amount of work. Motor, drive, interior, some glass work on dash, Paint, etc. What should i offer for this boat.

It had a 351 with a volvo drive. Will a 502 / Bravo1 fit without major modification to the hull? I know there is work to be done for the drive.

Sounds like a cool project. Hope you can work it out. If you've got any pictures, that will help us figure out a number.

All the best,
David

There are a couple of BB 18's, a 502 will be a Hoot! Just don't chop the throttle they tend to dunk the stern!

Not the greatest pictures. I will try to get more this week.

The motor is just sitting in the garage. So it would be nice to be able to use it. It's not really practical but would be cool. :drive:

Better pictures are needed before you make an offer please.

Anything that the 18's had on going issues with? I am new with donzi's.

Is that an x-18? As in, does the deck do a curve upward about a foot before the dash, and the stern do a similar curve upward behind the hatch? I only ask this because it resembles some of those curves in a couple of the pictures. Good catch if it's an X. Of course any 18 Classic is a good catch to me!

As for modification it is pretty extensive to do correctly and expensive. In an 18 it would be easier to do a 383 sb, in a 22 I would do a BB. Just an opinion.

I believe RedDog had a BB in his 18. Might be worth a shout to him.

It doesn't have the curve before the dash. It's seems to be pretty flat.

After looking at it again this morning, I am leaning away from the project. I am getting a feeling this boat has more structural issues than I know about. Port side of boat has a lot of large spider cracks and a couple of larger cracks on the dash that went all the way through.

------While just about anything fiberglass can be fixed, this boat would have a bunch of restoration involved. Deck is a mess. Its been doing a bunch of flexing. Of course, it needs a tank, and more than likely will need a transom and stringer redo, especially when you consider the 502 upgrade. I also wonder about the cockpit floor. Ill bet all the tabs to the hull are compromised. I would do all that if I was putting in a 350/250 Mercruiser/Alpha combo (about as tame as you can get). You have made a wise decision.

------Oh,,,And its not an X18.......Bill S

Unless you have experience with fiberglass repair work, I think you can find a Donzi with less damage. I have never actually seen one with a fractured dash. The amount of time and money this one seems to require would even make an experienced glass man cringe. Just my honest opinion, and I am one who likes to tackle most any project in the interest of restoring classics. Bill

Thanks for your advice. I am not too interested in spending the next year doing fiberglass repair work.

-------If you search for X18 you will eventually come up with a picture of an X18 deck and see the difference. You have shown us pictures of a standard Classic 18. The hull is the same. Only the deck is different. I bought an X18 with 454/TRS new in 1978. One of maybe six ever built. It was transom heavy but ran 70 right out of the box. Most X18s were Volvo driven with different power and there also was a smattering of TRS/280 boats like Madpoodles. I liked them the best for overall balance as well as robustness!!!!!.......Bill S

I'd be VERY curious to see the registration on this hull...

Why is that?

Sorry it's been so long since I checked back on this thread. And no, it's not an x18. I noticed that after I looked at the 2nd set of pictures. It would be a cool project if you had the time and money, but otherwise I think you're on the right track of not taking it on.

The X-18 has a flat deck that raises towards the cockpit. The front seats have taller backs, and the back of the rear seat doesn't curve around the corners.

The deck on a Classic 18 2+3 is curved, without the rise towards the cockpit.

X-18's are also faster..

.

due to the improved aerodynamics of the fore deck and the flared rear deck

good for 2 mph in fresh and 3.5 in salt ;)
