They have been scratching each other's back for years, so no surprise really.

I don't want to tell you this but they have been in that bed for years, just not officially. All the auto companies always referred to them as one.

Audi fits in there somewhere as well.

GM should of integrated it's divisions ages ago. Seems stupid to compete against yourself.

Yeah, I know, hence 'thay have been scratching each others backs for years" comment.

I have had a few Porsches, including a 914. It was WAY more VW than Porsche.

Waiting for my perfect 928 GT 5 spd to pop up........

You should have gone for a 914-6 then. Whole different animal
I've owned 2 914s myself, and yes, lots of VW there. Loved the handling tho. Then there's the CAyenne\Toureg.

Porsche is privately held, last I heard (porsche and piech families) and VW is public, right? Wonder how that piece works out? The article is a bit vague. Is this a merger or a joint venture?

Kind of like when the Dodgers got into a bidding war with themselves over the great but older than dirt, cancer in every clubhouse he's ever had the oppotunity to besmirch, but I digress.

Take the above opinion knowing I'm just an ignert tile guy, and not nearly as refined as some of those that know the inside stories that I apparently do not have the security clearance in order to know these secrets of state, but there again, I'm sure that's obvious.

And while I'm thinking of such subjects that are obviously well beyond the means of my lack of intelligence, how many state/county workers does it take to lean against a brand new 450 Diesel to turn the bright flashing lights on a the very end of my street?? Also, I not expert on construction by any means, but I think it wouldn't take nearly as long at time and a half pay, if every one of them did anything at all. I couted 16 guys doing absolutely nothing except draw time and a half pay. The only person working was a sweat (damn pretty I might add) girl who either had been deaf or had a cockelear implant.

Let me get back to you on that. I have to stop to pay my water bill today, just so happens my state representative's office it one floor above it in the new city hall that is chock full of the nicest marble flooring you'll ever see, and trust me, I know cheap chit when I see it. I'm also going to ask who is my county commisioner because when I first moved here, I got on a "prefered bidder's list". I just that meant the non prefererd because I live in the county where the taxes are paid, and therefore are supposed to stay circulated in the county. But what do I know, being an ignert tile guy and all. I will ask him EXACTLY how to explain it to an ingert tile guy as myself.

It is actually loose conglomerate: Porsche Audi VW.. It has been that way for a long time.. Kind of like GM with there many lines under GM like GMC & Chevy.. Actually P A V usually had all three names on the parts boxes for most parts when I worked with them years ago.. Except Porsche was a bit more on its own out of the 3..

I wonder if I am going to have to put Das V dub emblem on my carrera I bought this year?? Nah.. I will leave it alone... lol :) J

The new Porsche Panamerica or whatever it is called, looks a lot like a Bigger Beetle. They should look nice sitting together in the showroom, until people realize they can buy several small Beetles for the price of one big one. Fugly.

Hey George, did the cochlear implant comment trigger this question? (I'll leave the actual answer off for now, for more to ponder...)

Nah, I don't think so. Fact #1 is that every negative comment that one could make against any generation of the 911 series is made out of pure envy/jealousy. Fact #2 is that those fortunate enough to own said car are completely aware of fact #1!

LOL, good point. :)

I suspect its baby brother could give it a run for its money--they're probably trying to sort out whether to hold it back or play games with bigger power.

This is true.. I have had several of the cars & worked on & ran plenty more.. They are an amazing machine Almost 400hp out of a 3.6/3.8 non turbo 6cyl is a good accomplishment.. They were pretty good with what you could get on a 4 cyl too. My 951 Turbo was 300+ hp when I got done tuning it & would throw flames out the exhaust. The thing was fast for its day.. My Boxster was fun, but the 996 & 951 were my favs so far barring the c2 turbo & twin turbo which I just couldnt bring myself to throw the coin on yet.. But my 996 Carrera keeps me happy until then.. :) J

I have heard some of the story, maybe all of it, although it has been years since I heard it though, so my memory on it may be a bit clouded.. Originally I belive it was started by Horch or something like that and was raced and eventually went more mainstream. Several of the German autowerks companies did some of this like MB for one if my memory is correct. I remember the F. Porsche & original beetle V dub stories better.. But they all seem to have some cool & interesting history behind them..

On a different note how many of you other guys are running porsche's as well either old or new ? & post some pics if you have em.. :) :) Jamie

Jamie, I'm a little hazy on the details also, but it's something like this.
Horch built cars under his own name, big fancy expensive ones, and also started Auto Union, a kind of German GM....DKW, Horch, etc. For some reason, maybe financing forced it, but the Horch name went away, and since Horch still wanted to build cars, he used the Latin equivalent of "Horch" which was "Audi".

AUDI AG, is a German (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Germany) Volkswagen luxury subsidiary which produces cars under the Audi brand, (pronounced /aˈʊdi/ (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:IPA_for_English)). The name Audi is based on a Latin (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Latin) translation of the last name of the founder August "Horch", itself the German word for “hear." Another explanation for the origin of the name is as an acronym for “Auto Union Deutschland Ingolstadt."

(I was always slightly confused by which came first, but one would think Horch came first, and the acronym followed.)
