Let's say that someone were to take apart a Holman Moody motor and on top of the block it was stamped "302". Does that mean that it is a 302 motor? Thanks

More then likely, to check measure the stroke. The 302 is 3" the 351 is 3.50. Turn it over until you are sure one piston is bottomed out and stick a ruler in the hole!

the holman moody serial number will tell you too.

the 351 were 4000 series numbers and the 302 were 3000 series numbers

if the serial number plate is still on the bell housing it will also tell you hp rating , what carb, timing and cooling setup

Well we thought we had a 289. How do we tell a 302 from a 289?

The 289 had a shorter stroke 2:87 compared to 3:00 on the 302. It is not real easy to measure it is only .013 difference.

Yeah, I figured it wouldn't be too easy to tell. That's why I was curious about the top of the block being stamped "302". It's a mystery...

3.00 - 2.870 = .130 on my calculator

your results may vary :shades:

A 302 looks totally different than a 351 in width. A pic of the motor in ? will have a immediate responce by the ford guru's here.
