Well, after moving from Michigan to California this past November I finally went to check out the Southwest's infamous boating hot spot, Lake Havasu and the Desert storm poker run. Here are a few of my initial impressions and some pics.

- This is what people call a lake? It's no great lake but at least it's bigger than it looks on a map.

- These people know how to launch and retrieve. We sat by the launch for a few hours and only saw one or two clueless people at the ramp, the rest of the time it was a well oiled machine. No clueless newbies choking up the ramps like in Michigan.

- 21 Skaters in one place, wow!

- It seemed like every other tow rig was an F650 or a Sport Chassis

- No shortage of silicone on display in the channel

- I can see a Rhino being street legal but a quad?

- Magic certainly didn't go bust by not building boats, I think every other boat was a Magic deckboat

- Hey there were actually Donzi's here. 26 ZX, 28ZX, 38ZRC, 35ZR that I spotted.

- The CRC MTI and a bunch of Skaters lost the shootout to an Eliminator, that was the surprise of the weekend. Then I found out he was running 2 x 1,650s in a 33 Daytona, can you say rocket?!

- Extreme Trailers are the MYCO of the West

- I need to get my boat out here!

I think of Havasu as more a place to be seen than a place to boat. It's kind of like going to the Friday night cruise-in....you go there to check out who's got what and be seen, but if you want to drive, you go out in the mountains early Saturday morning where nobody is around...

And as you've probably figured out, Havasu is it's own little world. It doesn't have much bearing on reality.

Don -

That's the impression I got from what I saw. It's definitely it's own little world.

Carl -

Yup, it sure was crowded. I'm gonna miss the wide open spaces on Lake Michigan.

Jeff,
What a treat seeing those outrageous cats! My wife and I personally like the solitude and harmony with nature of our boating, but everyone is different. I can't imagine what some of those rigs would cost. Bill

Nice to hear from you, Jeff! Very cool shots, thanks for sharing them.

Definitely not too many economic worries among these folks. :shocking:

I bet seeing all those Skaters brought back a pretty cool (high speed) memory, 'eh?

Jeff,

Great pics! Thanks for sharing!

When I was assigned my western territory for work a couple years ago, the first thing I did was set an appointment in Havasu! I had been reading about this place for years but had never been there! I made it up during the week so it wasn't near as busy as when you were there. Unique for sure!:cool!:

You'd definitely never know there was any economic trouble from the scene at Desert Storm that weekend.

Great pics.

Havasu is like a Friday night car cruise on the water, where only the best are invited.

Great place to go and hang out on the water, but not a lake I enjoy if I really want to boat. It always amazes me that these big boats go there. Way, way too much boat for the lake.
