Just pulled these out of an old Volvo AQ (1.61:1 ratio) lower. The smaller gear has 2 teeth with some damage as shown in the first two pics. The rest of the teeth look like the third pic. The mating gears teeth all look like the fourth pic.

Question is: Are these fit for service or should I just pitch then into the scrap bin? Any input would be appreciated...

Thanks,
Frank

Pristine.

Is it just the missing chunks or is there something else?

Looks like "spalling" (on the surface) which is turning into "Brinnelling" (where the metal is coming apart under the surface) and it will keep flaking/breaking off little bits at a time until they (and everything else in the same oil bath) are History. Chuck Um!!! it's best to spend $200-300 bucks now, and not $1500+ later..

That sounds like a smart idea.

I guess that answers that question. I expect they will make good paperweights or I can throw them at the coyotes in the back yard.

Thanks for all the input.

I will agree with the above. Usually more then one tooth has issues and they all have a wear problem. So clean the gear case and replace the bearings too.

The case was junk to start with. I had to use cold chisels and a 4 lb. hammer to get the bearing carrier out. Ended up cutting the bottom of the gearcase off with the sawzall to drive the vertical shaft out of it. (Anybody need a nice Volvo skeg?) I was just hoping to save the 1.61 gears for one of my other drives that have the 4 cly gear set.
