I bought this boat....my dream 18. It will stay all original except maybe a 280T?.....how easy would that be to retrofit?

Any idea how to get a H&M badge for the Volvo?

:)

Congrats on the 18. So glad it was someone on the registry that got it. I think you bout stole it. It will need some resto, but WOW will you have something when you are done. I was so dreading that trip to Conneticut except to see you Matty. ha ha Seems like good guys that were selling it. Again congrats on the aquisition. Tom

Thanks....I'm super excited!

The trailer makes me a little nervous. Does it look too short to you guys? I'll bring spare wheels and new tires. What's the bolt pattern and size I should look for?

Nice catch there 'Hatz.

There's probably only a small number of guys that will keep it as original as you will.

Very nice.

Ditto on Matty's thought about the trip, if you need anything, shoot me a message, I'm 5 miles off of I-84, about a half hour away from the NY border.

it looks like the original rocket trailer, and in the first pic I posted it doesn't look like the boat is pulled all the way in but it could just be the angle of the pic

Yeah...it sure looks like a Rocket.....would that be correct for 1970? Any idea what kind of wheels they may have come with?....:)

Original Rocket trailer. Should be 5 on 4.5" wheels, 14"...
Does your better half know yet?? :nilly::nilly:

Better half?.....umm, don't have one of those....which might explain all the toys....:)

Aaron,
Congratulations! I followed that auction in My Ebay and saw it sold for so little. Definitely an original Rocket trailer with the breakdown tilt. The trimmable Volvo transom assembly only need a couple extra holes drilled for the hydraulics and I believe two extra bolts - same bolt pattern, though - easy! I installed one on my 1971 Donzi after taking it off my Eliminator, and it was a cake walk. Again, great score! I actually debated trying to buy it when I saw it might go for $3500 or so, but it was too far away from me to justify. Great to see you got it. Bill

Thanks Bill,

I think it's a fair price considering some of the unknowns...we'll see...:crossfing:

Regardless, it's one of the most original 18s I've seen in awhile. I wanted a 1970 (my birth year), with an original H&M Ford/Volvo...and an odd color combo...:)

I wish it were a little closer but then again I had to drive to Southern California to get my Mag....:convertib:

What is going on here? A 22 for $6K. An all original 18 for $4,700.

That is a fantastic deal.

Cool stuff! I'm excited about it going to someone who appreciates keeping it original. Mods and performance are cool and fun, but sometimes it's great to have a boat that looks the same as it did when it rolled off the showroom floor in the '70's. Congrats!

Thanks man....yeah, I don't think I've ever seen an original Donzi, Magnum or Cigarette from the 60s or 70s that I didn't like....I just love 'em!

I wish my Magnum were a little more original but I'm working on that...within reason....:cool!:

I will add my thumbs up to all the others.

Matty was remarking about the Dolphin/Lion stickers. Were they original or were the British/American Flag stickers replaced with them?

I and my son Jason have 2 Ski Sporters that we tried to keep as original as possible..

Enjoy...

I think what Matty was saying is that at some point around 1970, they changed from the British flag to the Dolphin sticker.....

I do love the British flag and Chrome "Donzi Marine" badges on the earlier boats.

WOW! That's just PERFECT! Welcome to the '70 Club! And kudos for keeping it original. You may want to drive it a little before you change that drive. My 1970 18 2+3 works pretty good without trim...

congratulations, and great price. We are in a buyers market now.
Like others said the coversion to a 280T is pretty straight forward. Two additional bolts and 2 holes for the hydraulics. To bad I just sold my spare 280T transom assembly.

------Congrats on a really good purchase!!! My first DONZI was this color combo, but a Corsican. Bought it in 1970 used, and it was already beat to death. What did I know back then??? Just a dumb kid. Sold it for a loss and moved on, but always loved those colors together. Almost elegant..........Bill S

Jim what does your 70 have in the way of decals.???

former thouhts were like 72 ish for the change from the flags to the lion and dolphin I know of in 71 the lion and dolphin were used seeing this 70 with it leads me to think the change is closer to the time of full chisholm owner ship. but that is one of my many theories still under investigation

let me look I have the part number some where, poodle sent me a sierra cap(marine) and i also got a mallory cap ( auto)from a local auto parts place, there is a difference in the auto and marine cap screened vents or something
the guy at the counter said it was for an old flat head ford

yes i would say it is very original there should be a holman moody serial number plate on the bell housing
get the numbers off of it it will tell us alot . the motor in the chicken boat looks exactly the same same vlave covers except that one is a 302

The only thing I see is the carb that is different. What is the H&M phone, The Corsican had the sticker along with the Corsican, which I now have. Soon to be all as sold stickers on it.

Holy smokes that was a Loooong drive. I picked up the 18 in Connecticut this weekend.....:)

The boat is a total time capsule....exactly what I wanted. It needs lots of buffing and most likely some mechanical but it's all there....

Of course I'll document everything for those who care....:bonk:

Here's a few.....and oh yeah, it came with the original outdrive and sweet H&M badge.....

BTW: the Rocket trailer is probably for a 16...the guy apparently traded his 16 in on this 18 and kept the trailer....it's a 1966?.....says 17 on it....anyone?

Wow! Beautiful! And the best year...:) Don't change a thing! And you'll be shocked at how well the gel will buff out.

How about a close-up of the gauges...

What is the hull number?

Hey Jim...yeah, it's going to stay all original. I'll just fix a few of the gel issues and buff the piss out of it. I'd prefer to have an original boat with some patina.

The boat is temporarily stored at my buddies house...I picked up my Magnum and left the Donzi for a bit.....I'll get some close up shots of the guages....they're really cool looking.

The hull number is 18-347....our boats were probably at the factory at the same time...:)

Yeah..Neat boat...
Isn't that an old airguide speedo to port of the instrument cluster? I'll bet that was an add-on.

The speedo is in the right spot, but mine was a Teleflex. Maybe the Airguide was an option. It's definitely period.

Aaron,
Coagulations beautiful boat and exceptional buy, that is definitely a rocket trailer. Agree with Matt and Jim keep it original and enjoy the old Volvo drives are bulletproof. I own a 1970 ski sporter with a 351 Holman Moody and 250 Volvo, real PIA to work on but looks and sounds very cool. Not many old Ford’s around and what you will learn is they have a different sound from the GM’s. Everyone will hear you coming long before they see you. My motor and outdrive have run great until I developed a problem last October and finally got a chance to look things over last week. The #6 cylinder exhaust valve seat came out of the head and jammed the valve in the open position and I had no compression in that cylinder. I got the bad news from the machine shop yesterday that the head could not be repaired. I started searching and found a good head with matching numbers and still have work to do before it goes back together. I will be happy to help you with any information I can.
Bob
