Hello Everyone,
I switched this thread from the 18 BBC hoping to get some input. I used to have a 1967 Sweet 16, made the mistake of selling it back in 2005. Saw this one and I'm seriously considering buying it. Seems to have been a lot of discussion about it. Other than the color is there a reason not to buy it at the $6000 price? The guy says that I shouldn't have any problems out of it. He said it GPS at 58 mph and it has 300 hours on it. Is an A1 on a BBC going to hold up if I don't hole shot it? He said he bought it from a guy in NY 5 yrs ago. Does anyone have the long term scoop on this boat?

Thanks for any info.

My brother has an '87 22 classic. He had over 1000 hours with the Big block alpha setup with no problems. he took off the drive working and switched to a bravo with a different (more power) engine.

The boat may have the rare higher X dimension... worth measuring, a cool feature if you do future mods with more power because you will get more MPH out of it

If I were you, I'd get quotes for a trailer if you plan on towing it. He says the trailer is not good. In most states a BBC 22 will require brakes on the trailer which means $$$$... you may find out that you can get a different 22 with a good trailer for the same money in the end so you can weigh the options after you do the math.

Obviously I haven't seen the boat other than a couple pictures. Sure the color is a bit weird and yeah, it probably hurts the resale a bit. But unless the thing is loaded with rot you can't go wrong at the price. Even if you put $5K into it to make it nice, you end up with a 22 for less than most others are asking.

there are probably a few reasons

this boat as always been well under normal 22 values at any given time

I passed on the boat 4-5 years ago when it was in ny as I recall it had some rock rash and had one side worse than the other it had bottom paint can't speak for the maint or care it recieved from then til now but the saying you get what you pay for as some truth in it

Jamie,

I talked with Andy last month about the boat. I choose to pass on it since it would be a complete redo for me. (Not into green) He had put some work into it. Not sure of the quality since I have not seen it. I might be heading out west next week to look at some hi-perf OB's if you want me to stop by. Here are the pics he sent me.

I've been talking to Andy and he says he has a dealer out of FL who will buy it sight unseen. He said it has a problem with the temp starting to climb when idle he talked to a local shop and they said it would need an impeller plus they suggested servicing it for around $350. He said the trailer will make the trip he just repacked the bearings. So he said I can take it how it sits or he can sell it to the FL dealer I have to let him know by tomorrow. It is a 3000 mile round trip.

...he says he has a dealer out of FL who will buy it sight unseen.
1) I would think if he had someone willing to buy it sight unseen, it would already be gone.
2) I don't know of any dealer that would buy something sight unseen....especially a boat....especially in this market.

In the first pic posted by txtaz, it looks like the glass around the stringer hole is frayed. If that is the case, it means the hole is not sealed, which means rotten stringers.
The cracks in the floor will require the deck to come off to repair.

I'm not saying the boat isn't worth 6k. You can't get (or expect) much at that price, but you should expect to have to do some major work to it. If you can do the work yourself, it might be worth it for you. Only you can answer that. If you have to pay someone to do the work, you'd probably be better off paying more, for a better boat.

There you go....2 cents worth of advice from Canada.....and I won't even charge you the 2cents.

It looks like it is a 6000.00 boat. That being said, when was the last time anyone saw a 22 in good/bad/ugly condition for 6000.00?

I am with Yeller. Could make a very nice project, just consider what your expectations are and how big your pocket book is.

Now, if you expect a 6000.00 boat, are financially prepared to fix what might need a fixin', can you get past the color????:biggrin.::biggrin.:

I have seen two 22 deals
in CT 89 or 90 454 omc king boat in good shape a wet sand and some tlc and it was a turn key boat missed it by an hour 8500. the 87 22 in st simons ga in very good shape went for around 10k again both std donzi colors red and white and blue and white both with trailers so the deals are out there

what is the charge to get it back to you? add that with the tlc and another 6k easy if not more for 12k -15k you can get a turnkey nice 22

the black stripe is new I don't recall that I also recall one side was never photographed it was hammered.

my contention at first was it was a testa and some got sick of the red and went green but that was not the case it is not a testa

so with the stripe someone may have cleaned up the rash

I've decided to pass if anyone is interested Andy's number is 970-749-8971. I'm restoring a 36' sailboat and if I get another project right now the wife will kill me. I know mixing power and wind is dangerous but I like living on the edge.

Thanks again,
Robert

I am sorry DW, I meant if it went 48 where you are, how fast would it go at sea level? Around 57 to 58 mph is my guess? Tom

I have owned 11 boats since moving here. I find they all tend to lose 8-11 mph from sea level, depending on the setup.

My 16 lost only 9 mph, my Milan before that lost 11 mph (22 ft, 330 hp 7.4L).

Hi all you other Donzi Lovers,

A little feedback on my 22 classic Donzi. Despite all the speculation this is very nice boat! No rash or signs of repair, super nice dry hull with NO rot or signs of fatigue. The 454 is very fresh and runs perfect. Nice interior. I know the price is raising some eyebrows but we really want to sell it this spring. If anyone comes to inspect it I know they will be pleasantly surprised.

I am curious about the X dimension. How would I measure for this?

I really like your Donzi, Andy. If it weren't for the fact that the project I have is already consuming my Donzi fund, we just might be talking. Good luck with the sale. I'll keep my eyes and ears open in my neck of the woods for you.

All the best,
David
