I'm here in LA for a week of sunshine and relaxation, and I learn of this.

And have watched the video Matty posted.

A person who would say these things has absolutely no idea how the world works, or why we aren't currently speaking German. And to announce this in these circumstances, outside of the US. . .

Is war evil and ugly? Yes. Are weapons used to do terrible things? Absolutely. But being powerful is the only way to try and insure that you experience neither war or its destruction.

I agree the concept is idiotic.

I haven't thought much about what Obama is doing on this one, but one thought which comes to mind (especially looking at the 3 aspects listed in the article, where notably absent is the dismantling of any weapons) is that it is some rhetoric to argue with the Irans and North Koreas that further development has to halt. When they cry foul, we can say, 'hey, even we are going to get rid of ours.'

Of course, it won't stop them. And it is a stupid thing to say. But I wonder if that is why he is saying this nonsense. Just a thought, off the cuff.
