View Full Version : Your favorite band that no one knows about?

I'll bet everyone has a band that isn't widely known.

Mine's a band called Reel Big Fish. They're a ska-punk band from Cali. Most of their songs have some pretty funny, wise assed lyrics, which suits me fine.

Just remembered how much I like these guys when Comcast on Demand had a half hour of one of their concerts in the ConcertTV section. Found the full length version on a DVD bonus that comes with their live CD set (called "Our Live Album is Better than your Live Album"). I've probably watched it 5X since I got it. :shades:

So.......What's your favorite unknown band?

The Nighthawks from the D.C. suburbs - a traditional / roots blues band since the early 70's,

The Hawks have played with some very impressive company, such as ; John Mayall, Hubert Sumlin, Kinkey Friedman, John Hammond, Greg Allman, Bonnie Raitt, Paul Birerre / Billy Powell (Little Feat), Billy Price, Pinetop Perkins, and the list gets longer.
Check their website; thenighthawks.com

The Hawks were also featured on a few occasions on HBOs "HOMICIDE". They played at the winter olympics at Lake Placid, and still tour internationally (including Europe and Japan)

Those of us with deeply rooted visions of Rebecca DeMornay on a set of hardwood stairs, we've heard of 'em. But you're right, most people have no idea, at least since the 80s.

Easy. Todd Snider. I've thrown a few of his songs up on the song list thread. He's a story teller - he can't do a live song without telling 5 minutes of backstory. Most of his songs are pretty funny, although a few are serious.

Yes, Reel Big Fish is great. I'm a huge ska fan (was a band geek in high school...played trumpet).

I'm a fan of Carbon Leaf. They've been around for a while, so you might have heard of them, but they're not a huge name. Kinda chilled music.

Crack the Sky's "Ice" is one of the great odd and hard-to-classify rock songs EVER. Like Bohemian Rhapsody in this regard. I'd put it on the list of 100 coolest rock songs of all time (pun not intended and just distracting, stop it.) :)

I love this thread. It's killing me that I can't produce an answer that I even think is right for me. So many thoughts, nothing seems like the definitive one. Joan Armatrading, the Housemartins, the Proclaimers and the Plimsouls got plenty noticed for at least a brief time or for one song, though nobody ever seems to recognize them now, nor did people seem to pick up on how consistently good everything they did was. Jesus and Mary Chain kinda the same way. Mike Doughty gets occasional airplay on alternative stations, and as the lead singer from Soul Coughing, isn't all that obscure. Most of these are, on reflection, bands that had a lot more to offer than anyone ever noticed, but they did get "heard of", so they're out. NWH (Niggaz With Hats) and Jonathan Coulton are both mostly humorous, but the music is better than that would ever get credit for. Still, it doesn't quite seem right for this category.

So in the true spirit of the thread, I'll take two stabs: one long since gone, and one that is still around. I think they're sufficiently obscure. Anyone here who's ever heard of either I will gladly buy a couple of drinks:

Great Speckled Bird was a one-album offshoot project of Ian and Silvia back in about 1969 or so. Every song is good, some are great. ("Billy had twin Chryslers installed in a Juan de Fuca Belle... and the Coast Guard never ever caught him, but they run his @ss all over hell...")
Blue Turtle Seduction is a curious band out of South Lake Tahoe or somewhere. Stumbled into them in Austin, TX. Went back the second night I was in town to watch them again. Highly recommended live--nothing I have heard recorded captures the sound. Drums, fiddle, mandolin, harmonica, bass, and amazing 3-part-harmony vocals. Everyone tries (and fails) to slap some sort of hybrid categorizer on them.

Cool replies everyone. I think Ghost summed it up pretty well. I've heard of several....most are a mystery which is good. I'll be checking a lot of utube come this weekend.

I'm getting older, and a lot of new music doesn't do the trick for me. I'm sure not going to hear anything unique on the radio (radio sux post 1996 or so). Figured this would be a good way to find some new (to me) stuff.

Thanks everyone and keep 'em coming.....

Ghost, your thoughts sum up why I haven't posted on this thread before. If they were obscure enough to not be noticed then there probably wasn"t/isn't that raw talent that makes them worth remembering. Canada has such a great live music scene, and even though Lenny and I are half a COuntry apart we probably saw a lot of the same bar bands coming up that went on to find that raw energy that made heading out to a night of live music something to remember....
That being said here are a few that most of the Canadian guys will probably know......

Blackie and the Rodeo Kings - Tom Wilson runs through some many great bands... The Florida Razors, Junkhouse

I always found it interesting when certain bands were formed how they contained members who went on to chart big.
1.)The Stone Ponys who backed up Rondstat and went on to become the Eagles.
2.) Jay Ferguson who was in Jo Jo Gunne before Spirit.
3.) Page being in the Yardbirds before Zep.
4.)The Classics #4 (Spooky) Who later became The Atlanta Rythym Section.
5.)Jim Peterzack(SP?) who was in The Ides Of March (Vehicle) and went on to be in Survivor(80's band..Eye Of The Tiger...RockyIII I think.)
6.)Free(All Right Now) who went on to be Bad Company.

Anyway, to the topic of this thread..
My choice..Henry Lee Summer..
I performed with him all thru 2003, long after his heyday was over. he's a nice guy and had a short burst of fame in the late-80's.
His chart-toppers were..
"Wish I had A Girl."
"Hey Baby"
Both were MTV staples for a bit and he toured with Richard Marx. Cheap Trick and Chicago.
He was one of, if not THE greatest frontman to hit a stage. It cannot be described on a forum how he could relate to a crowd and take them places..Amazing band that he had back then..Most of whom I'm still friends with.
His timing may have been wrong and contributed to his short run of national success. He was surrounded by Def Leppard, Michael Jackson, The big-hair metal scene..There was lots of competition in the industry then..Henry might've just gotten lost in the shuffle, but who knows.
He is my favorite artist that "No one..Well, let's say a few still know about."

Y'know, I think they sound better with Paul..He brings an old-school rootsiness to them as opposed to Freddie's glam-cutting edge approach.

Two totally different singers..opposite ends of the spectrum. They are both artists who shaped the ongoing format of rock-n-roll.
It comes down to personal tastes.. Obviously Paul Rodgers couldn't put together "Bohemian Raphsody," Freddie is a huge reason why Queen got to where they were..Paul Rodgers just takes them down a road I happen to like..

Mike O..Drums for me..Been playing out since '81.. I took them up in '67, and they have been instrumental in me not having to face "growing up" and cutting my hair.
Unfortunately, my gigging keeps me from attending Donzi events 'cause of my Thurs/Fri/Sat. schedule.

Got off the wagon a little here..Another great not-so-well-known band was DelAmitri..THE most incredible songwriting and lyrics I've ever heard..Why they never got further is a huge mystery to me..They charted a couple things in the early-mid 90's.

I totally get this, about Queen and the new direction and just being different. Very cool.

Not that it matters, but my only complaint about that is that they don't rename the band. Paul Rodgers and Freddie, as you point out, are two very different but great voices of rock. I just like it better when a completely new direction comes with its own name. I know that's asking a lot, but no matter how good it may be now, it isn't "Queen" to me.

(Besides, wasn't Queen really named by and for Freddie? I don't know that to be true at all, but it always made sense to me. And I don't mean any of this in a mean or mocking way, seriously. I've just never heard anything about the rest of the band in this regard. A little light checking on the net suggested I was right about the origin of the name being chosen by Freddie, in part from the gay connotation.)

You are confusing your own personal likes and dislikes with 'good' and 'bad."
It is fine to be nostalgic and prefer the old Queen..There is nothing wrong with that.

To say that Paul Rodgers and what's left is "bad Queen" is incorrect. He is a world-class singer paired with hall-of-fame rockers. I have listened to those clips and they sound great.
These guys are playing better than they ever did. I don't know for sure about Queen, but many of the 70's and 80's hitmakers have cleaned up, went drug and alchol-free and are playing at their highest level ever. For the first time, many of them even know what city they're playing in. They'll never have another hit, but they'll always have a big fanbase, and are able to enjoy their craft to the fullest.
The fact that the lineups are different doesen't mean they're "bad."
Journey doesn't need Steve Perry, either..They are a great band without him and still pack stadiums.
I do not mean to turn this into an artistic argument, and I enjoy reading your posts. I am no ones' mechanic, computer expert, or boat restorer. I DO know music, however, and I know that Queen and Paul Rodgers are good.
Respectfully submitted,

Magicallbill.

I like Paul. Bad Co was bad ass. I love Queen. Just for being Queen. But not together. You mention Journey. They didn’t get the lead singer of Creed to front the band. The guy they got sounds more like Steve Perry then Steve Perry does. I also think it’s great past bands are making a come back but again I like Lynyrd Skynyrd but with out a VanZant in the front it would be sacrilegious

I will say this..Paul throws such a stylistic change into the Queen mix that you either love it or hate it..I happen to like the way he sings those songs and how the band rocks behind him, but, again, it comes down to personal taste.
Thinking a little further into this, there are bands that CANNOT lose their signature singer and get away with it. You can't have the Stones without Mick and there shouldn't be any Aerosmith without Steven. I'll concede on this.

Great thread. I just found it (mostly because I don't come here enough :-()
How about The Forgotten Rebels. Punk band. Fred Eaglesmith. Folk/ Country. Blu Edmunston. Country. The Headstones!!! (I miss your spitting Hugh, but good job on Flashpoint) How about Eric Johnson. Look for cliffs of Dover. AMAZING guitar player!
Some others we as Canadians may take for granted, but perhaps they weren't as well known across the line; Helix. Chilliwack. Cowboy Junkies. Blue Rodeo. The list goes on. The beauty of Satellite Radio is how it has given smaller market bands a larger fan base.
One band I discovered in college was called Diesel Hum. Good band Great name.
Keep this going I still have some room left on the iPod.

I can't believe I forgot the MUDMEN. If you think bagpipes and hardrock belong together, like I do  Find some MUDMEN. Drink and Fight. Saturday. A great version of Home for a Rest. The Rogues are another good one too.

I had, and may still have a Jo Jo Gunne 8 track. My favorite song was Run, run, run. I think they also did "Shake that fat". :)
I know I still have Spirit The Seven Dreams of Dr Sardonicus on vinyl, with Randy California. :)
A lot of the great guitarist came through the Yardbirds, Clapton being one of them, I believe Jeff Beck too.
Ides of March did Vehicle, and I think one other one hit wonder. I could have them mistaken with the Shocking Blue. :)
Paul Rodgers sang for Free, and Bad Co. I think he was also a singer for another well known band. One of the best voices in rock, imho. My sisters and I had the 45 of Alright Now, and you can look at it and tell we listened to it over and over. I think my older sister ganked all the good 45's from Mom's.

My favorite song by Free. I remember being in a bar called the Hobbit in Dunedin hearing a band play Wishing Well. It rocked! :)

Whats your instrument? I studied percussion at Berkeley (Boston) in the 70'S.
A drummer is just a guy that hangs out with the band.:cistineb::eek!::toilet:

I'm sorry. I couldn’t even watch that to the end. Had to click on the real Queen vid pictured and We are ... is not my favorite song by a long shot.
Paul Rogers and what’s left of Queen equals Bad-Queen.

I thought Steve Perry was one sisified looking dweeb, but he could damn sure sing! He had an opera trained voice, and that's saying a lot. You don't find many voices like his out of a garage band.

Live performances by Steve Perry are simply amazing, I was never a big Journey fan, but there is no doubting his pipes! You can't doctor his voice live like you can in the studio. Journey was smart enough to feature their best instrument. Their best instrument was Steve Perry's voice. :)

Lot of good ones covered here, love the lesser-knowns. Boxy, that Convoy cover by Jeezus is great, are they Canadian?

I love the old punk and alternative from the '80's. In the last couple of years I have seen The Violent Femmes, Dead Kennedy's (minus Jello Biafra), and The Smithereens. But am into Husker Du, Hoodoos as well, Lloyd Cole and the Commotion, The Smiths/Morrisey, Dead Milkmen, Ministry, The Replacements (Canadian I think?), Suicidal Tendancies, and then the midwest bands like Hopscotch Army, Naked Raygun, Mystic Groovies, and then the band that made our music in our Homeless OlypmX video, The Wailhounds (here in Fort Wayne, IN).

Great thread! Thanx Boxy, you threw up some cool stuff!

Hey, I think you stole my iPod :boggled: Replacements are from Minneapolis. I'm from NJ, and was down at paramount (or universal, always get mixed up) studios in orlando doing a live radio show. That evening, which was halloween, they had a surprise band to go with all the haunted stuff running around. Yep, I came all the way from Jersey to see a band from Hoboken. the SMithereens. I loved it. :)

You know, I think I thought the Replacements were Canadian because of that line in I'll Be You where he says 'I was from Canada'. Pat Dinizzio and the boys put on a kick a$$ show, and I think we are gonna catch them again this summer in Chicago! Barbi still has a couple of their guitar picks from the show. Sisters of Mercy, Public Image Limited, XTC, pretty much anything that was played on Mtv's 120 Minutes in the late 80's

Grab a cold beverage, and click on this link, and work your way through Rock and Roll history. Barrymore's was a huge live music venue in Ottawa from the late 70's to the early 90's. The building was built in 1914, and has a capacity of 400 people. It's still open, but it's more DJ oriented now.
The Bands that are on this list are pretty cool....... :shades::shades:
Sam and Dave, Stevie Ray Vaughn, U2, James Brown, Tina Turner and many more graced the stage.
