Ever since I got this boat I've been somewhat worried that there were no serial numbers printed on the valve cover information sticker.

Since I've now got the engine out and all stripped down to the long block, I finally found it on little metal tag riveted to the block above the starter. It was also on a sticker on the bellhousing.

M005209

Can anybody out there 'read' that for me? The boat's an '01, and I'm sure the motor's a 502, but I wonder if it might be a replacement motor?

The engine serial number on my 2006 Mercuiser 502 was located starboard side just aft of the impeller housing

hmmmm....not a casting number - it's a Merc number. Found it on a small steel plate riveted to the block. The plate is screen printed with Merc's logo and stamped with the number. Found it again on a sticker on the back of the bellhousing.

It looks similar to the 502 numbers in the list in your link, but they only go into the mid 90's for 502s.

I'll take a picture of it later.
