I know I may be chastized for not knowing how to use the Forum but will ask this anyway. I am wondering what the symptoms of gimbal bearing failure are. I am running a 67 classic 18 with Merc 350 transplant. Thanks much ia advance.

Sometimes you can get a squeeling/Screeching sound, sometime a vibration that changes with speed/rpm and if it gets hot enough it can even smoke in the bilge.

What drive?

Pull the drive and check it by hand.

Early symptom is a knocking noise at slow speeds in both directions when the drive is turned hard over, noise in just one direction can indicate misalignment. Once it starts to the growl or starts to squeal it can spin in the transom shield, then it is a big job and costly.

Thanks for the input, I am not experiencing any of these symptoms so this is GOOD. The drive is an older alpha one. This is a great site.
