Oh God, not another oil thread:eek:! I'll post this as a poll so it doesn't get out of hand. Comments are still welcome. I bought a new 2008 Ford F-150 with the 5.4 Triton motor. I've hit over 3,000 miles and it is time for it's first oil change and the oil is draining right now. Ford says to use 5w20 motor oil. This seems awfully light for severe hot weather use and I am switching to 5w-30 Mobil 1. On the container it says "Truck & Suv, for hard working gasoline engines". The poll is anonymous and multiple choice.

BBQ'd pork tenderloin, on a whole wheat pita with spicy BBQ sauce, lettuce and Ranch dressing. Pasta salad, and garlic dill spears on the side.

I run 5W-30 dino in my '07 Toyota V-6. (Factory Recommended) I believe the reason Mfgs specify what seems to be Light Oil is that on first startup, the engine is spinning over much faster....While it's still COLD.. than it ever did in the Old Days. This is because the engine needs to get up to running Temp FAST..so everything is HOT and all the Anti Pollution stuff is functioning as Quickly as possable..which depends on HEAT....We don't want to POLITE any more than absolutely necessary.

SO: We really want to use lighter oil so it gets flowing as Quickly as possable. John

Running the FOMOCO synthetic in Heidi's 5.4...

Didn't know about that. What is the viscosity rating?

Another reason is simply to increase mpg rating. Watery thin oil = less parasitic drag to pump it.

I run Mobil 1 5-20 in my 5.4. They sell it in 5 gallon jugs at wally world for a decent price. I think 7 quarts + a Pure 1 filter is about $40 tax included.

I was told to NOT run 5-30 in the engine because of tolerance issues. I figure I'll switch to 5-30 when it hits 80k or more miles and things are a bit looser.

You should run the 5-20w that Ford spec's, From what I have read they don't do well with other weight oils. Fords tolerences are tight, thats why they have gone to such a lite weight oil. I am running penzoil Platinum 5w-20, and have been very pleased so far. The engine seems to be a little quieter. Altough the Motorcraft syntetic is know to be a good choice also. Below is a link to a Ford truck forum, their are alot of knowledgeable people on it. It s a good source. I also posted below a very good oil forum. If you have a mechanical failure, Ford could void your warrenty for not using the specified oil. Their getting pretty particular these days with trying to control warrenty costs.

Carl, go with the manufactures specification. 1. You truck is still under warranty. If, for whatever reason, the engine blows, and you are not using the recommended oil, then they can negate your warranty. 2. The manufacturer recommends using a certain weight oil, I would use it. They produced the engine.

When the warranty runs out, use whatever the hell you want.

Ford tried the ole' wrong oil on one of my 6.0L that blew injectors that was still under warranty. I had a independent lab analize the oil. It was the right weight and within Ford's specs. Amazing how they realized I was serious and fixed the engine's injectors at this point under warranty.

Short version, a manufacturer cannot make a warranty contingent on you using their parts (oil in this case) unless they give you the parts for no cost for the duration of the warranty.

Doesn't mean they can't try.

Who knows on that one, maybe it was because the 6.0L was a disaster for Ford and they were just trying everything they could to get out of fixing it. Not the first, second, third or tenth time they tried to screw with me on a 6.0L still under warranty that blew a turbo or injectors or oil pump or whatever. Ford fixed the hell out of them at first, but became harder and harder to get to warranty that particular engine.

Why the fleet is now Chevy.

Jim,

V100?

Are you asking viscosity at 100C?
