Been doing my master bedroom remodel, the room is 18X18 had no vault with 8' ceilings, made the ceiling feel like it was coming in on you. So It got opened up.

Ed, I thought about a sky light but it just didnt fit with my roof lines. I've taken out a double 8' window put in a 6' sliding glass door, built a 14X22 private deck, put in two 4' windows and now am at the barrel vault, only thing left is to rework a 3X18 closet, do a little wiring, rock, trim and paint. Oh then there's that master bathroom that needs done next but I think I and the wallet will need a break.

I did a few skylights in my time in houses I have owned.........then after all the problems, I figured out that it's never a good idea to put a hole in your roof. It just never seems to work out in the long run. They all eventually leaked ar had other problems.

Nice project...............I wish my house didn't have a pitched roof or I would do it too.

I considered the same type of thing 10 years ago but was worried that, without many of the 2x6's going across for support, that the walls might start moving outwards. So I went with a skylight instead and no problems came out great.

looks good

you going to put lights on that shelf to shoot upwards?

have you considered the effects of removing the horizontal bracing

imo skylights work very well when installed properly and have the proper flashings etc for the roof finish

stick with VELUX skylights and you can't go wrong

Shea, I used 2 10"x20'x1.75" microlams on each side of the opening, it is not going to go anywhere, as far as removing the cross bracing in the roof rafters, no they will remain and be independent of the vault. Yes the tray/shelf is made for lighting to shine upward on the barrel which will be on a dimmer switch. Steve
