This is a 1996??? 502 MPI. It has Revolution Marine exhaust manifolds and risers.
44276

I didn't know MPI was available on Mercruisers in 96.

Are these manifolds aluminum?

It looks like the oil filter was relocated. Not a bad thing.

What is the filter on the lower STBD side?

Anyone running serpetine setups on 502's?

Anything else jump out to others?

Thanks,

would you buy a boat and quit masturbating over every for sale ad already...

I think '96 was first year of Magnum MPI/EFI system. Different fuel system that was notorius for vapor lock. Merc had a bulletin/parts that updated & helped to alleviate. These were also MEFI 1 which doesn't accomodate boost...if that's something to consider down the line.

Chill Jim,

I'm patient and will get the boat I want. AND when I do, you can ooohhhh and ahhhhh all you want. The other is optional, just don't stain the carpet.

Thanks for the tips handfulz.

I have the '98 MPI 502 with serpentine belt. The filter on the starboard side down low is the fuel filter / water separator.

Revolution Marine manifolds would be aluminum

Taz...you have a SERIAL Number on the engine? That would help w proper ID etc..:pimp:

I'll see if I can get it.

Thanks RedDog. I like the serpentine better.

I like the serpentine as well but if you ever want to ditch the water pump to go with a crossover, you are pretty limited to pricey options. CP or Hardin or ??? makes a crossover with an idler pulley

A shorter belt is not an option?

No personal experience, but I would imagine w/some re-arranging, you could.
Particularly if you used a crank driven pump.

My '01 502 Mag has the same basic setup with a serpentine belt.

I've found a solution to running a crossover: buy a blower kit that comes with the crossover :biggrin.:

BTW, was there a pic or something with this post that I missed???

There is a ton of stuff you can do to that engine. Handful is right, the MEFI 1 does not have a boost table. It can be programmed to be happy with 5 or maybe 7 lbs though

That particular 502 (finally got to view the photo) does not have the same oil filter my 454 has. It is not a Mercury set up.

My '01 502 had the filter in roughly the same location (a little different, but similar) but I had to modify some brackets when I installed the SM manifolds. That bracket is obviously aftermarket - I wonder if it was a result of the manifold install?

How severe are the vapor locks? Any ideas on how available part fixes are?

As far as the oil filter and bracket, I'm thinking a dual remote filter setup would be nice.

Fuel Cooler!

Let's correct that to read:

:mad:Fuel Cooler!-:cussball:

(the sucker might work, but it's a real PITA to get to!)

Is that oil filter bracket only attached to the engine by the one bolt at the exhaust elbow or are there others that can't be seen in the picture?

1996 was the first year of the MPI also the GenVI block with the roller cam setup. Serial 802600 and up. and the infamous VST....Don't worry about the vapor lock until you have a problem. Lots do, lots don't have an issue with it.

The vertical part of the bracket continues to the back end of the riser where it has another bolt.

I have a 94' that came stock w/ 502mpi. Oil filter was pushed further outboard about 6 inches due to the hose on the exaust manifold.

A true 95 was a Gen V, 502 EFI. The Gen VI MPI started in model year 1996 engine # OF802600 and up. Maybe you have one the first and they got it into the 95 boat or they did some MPIs earlier in 1995. That would be nice. Merc does a lot of introducing new features mid way through the year and changing over throughout the year. Like in 2001, part 502, part 496(forged in those days). By 1996 they were all Gen VI MPIs.

Check the engine and boat serial # and count the # of bolts on the timing chain cover to see if you have a Gen 5 or Gen 6 block. That would be very interesting to know.

Do you have pedestal seats or box bottom seats? That was a 1995ish/1996 changeover as well.

No clue about the Gen V or Gen VI I was just stating they made a 502 MPI in 1995.

Mine had pedestal seats.

The engines were virtually identical back to 1993 whether Merc called them EFI or MPI it was the same basic setup, fuel rail, etc., just the Gen 5 to Gen 6 change. Little difference. The Gen 6 was a significant change however with the addition of the roller cam setup.

I don't want to say this but there are quite a few of gen V with roller set ups. as for the serpentine belt they all can be made to fit if your persistent. Me I prefer the V belt in some applications and MY boat is one of them. The oil filter is prefered with opening up. not as messy and can be filled without priming. This is all nice but what about THE boat, an engine is an engine but a BOAT is personal:yes::yes::yes:

Very good point Griz. The inverted filter on the 18 threw me for a loop and was messy to change out.

The hunt for a 22 with a 502 still continues however it has slowed down due to the hours I work. It will come.

Thanks for the info everyone.
