I could be wrong, but I thought 02 was the 1st year of the 496.

Very nice boat! Just a quick drive for you Lenny. When are going to get it.:)

The price seems like a typo, did they mean to hit the 5 instead of the 2? holy moly.

I usually don't like the honey color, but with that tan interior... NICE!

and it could be sitting at AOTH waiting for you to pick her up.

She would even be nice and cozy in the flowerpot's store-and-lock until you got there.

Might cost you a demo ride too...

Anything to help.

'01 was still the 502
'02 was the start of the 8.1

Least ways thats the way I figure it.

to have some questions....

factory 425HO without dual ram tabs? didn't the 375 come with singles?

if so, the 375 isn't as blower *friendly* as the 425 ? ...

no external steering for power potential?

lot's of potential though...

did I throw anybody off track?

I'm still lost as to what is actually different on the HO vs standard 496. It seems like Merc just puts a different computer program on the HO and charges a premium for it.

The 496 isn't really whipple friendly that I know of. But at that price you can run the piss out of it, blow it, then rebuild the bottom end the right way.

didn't the early 496 have a push rod problem???

the more i look at it the more i think that is the boat nelems ordered down to the ss donzi

market seems to be flooding with newer 2000's 22's i guess things are bad

From a post on OSO that referenced the GM Performance site:

496 MAG (375hp)
Block: Cast Iron
Cylinder Head: Cast Iron (with exhaust valve seat inserts)
Intake Manifold: One Piece coated Cast Aluminum
Crankshaft: High-Density Nodular Iron (with undercut and rolled fillets)
Pistons: Hypereutectic Cast Aluminum
Connecting Rods: Forged 1141 SAE Steel (short -peened and magnafluxed, with 9-mm diameter connecting rod bolts.

496 MAG HO (425hp)
Block: Cast Iron
Cylinder Head: Cast Iron (with exhaust valve seat inserts)
Intake Manifold: One Piece coated Cast Aluminum
Crankshaft: Forged Steel (with undercut and rolled fillets)
Pistons: Hypereutectic Cast Aluminum
Connecting Rods: Forged 1141 SAE Steel (short -peened and magnafluxed, with 9-mm diameter connecting rod bolts.

Both are internally balanced. Besides the above, there is a different cam and programming between the two.

But, I think they went to the cast crank in both around the 2005 time frame.

In some respects the "smaller" cam profile in the 375 might actually be a better cam for a boosted application vs. the higher lift, longer overlap HO cam. I suppose Whipple and Raylor would have a lot more detailed info.

didn't the early 496 have a push rod problem???The early ones did, (it was either pushrods or rockers). I think the problem was with the end of the rod failing and it would grind it's way through the rocker. In any case you can get them replaced for free if your engine is in the affected ser# range.

Cam and programming is the difference between HO and Mag.

The forged crank was phased out in the early part of 04 production. I didn't think the rods were forged.

That's been my understanding too.

Would someone hurry up and buy this boat so my wife can breathe easier, we don't need two 22's in the garage. Would save me puchasing the whipple for mine though!

Is this the same boat that was for sale last year in Bakersfield, California? If so the price was hovering between 50 and 60k last time it was listed on Boat Trader. Same colors and whipple! Beautiful Boat!
