What do you guys think is my best option for replacing a q jet? Would you go with a Holly or an Edelbrock and what size/Type . A q jet can be 750 to 800 cfm staged though . Maybe just a direct replacment would be my best option. 350 .020 over 9.2 compression, Edelbrock performer rpm q jet manifold, 454/ 480 -216/228 cam 1.6 rockers on the intake ,
2.02 and 1.6 performance CI heads, 4 inch Osco manifolds I figure 300-350 HP Volvo 270 Michigan 14 1/4 x 22.5 ss cupped prop. When it was running correctly was able to achive 5000 rpm
Thoughts Thanks Ralph

The Qjet setup correctly is a great carb and some what less troublesome the many others, if you do end up sticking with it I have some good reading on setup.

Ralph, I just replaced an 800 cfm holley on my 454 with a new Holley 4175 marine, which is a 650 cfm w/vacuum secondaries. This carb is a direct quadrajet replacement spreadbore. It is working GREAT and I think would be an excellent setup for your smallblock. Here is the link to it at the Holley website: Holley 4175 (http://www.holley.com/0-80552.asp)

Why are you replacing it? I agree with Phil that the qjet is a good carb......best option would probably be rebuilding it.

The carburetor has been rebult several times by me. Well the age is there I have some hesitation lean out issues on the top end. At the last rebuild a few years ago there was some corrosion in the bowl and some other non removable corrosion that leads me to saying replace at this time . I didn't know if I should stick with the Q jet or look for something better.
Mop what ever tuning info. you have would be great.
Thanks Ralph

:yes::yes: I agree with Howard. I have never in 54 years of messing around with engines had any sort of luck with Q-jets!!! Holley all the way!

Also If you look at the parts for sale section, you will find an allmost brand new 750 Holley for sale at A very reasonable price. It may however be A little big for A small block. Hence the reason the seller is selling it. You would however need an adaptor plate for the 750 or just up grade the intake to acconidate the 750. It all depends on how modified your SB is has to weather or not A 750 would work!

I have a Qjet in the shop that I am going to setup for mine and will be pulling the 750 Holley off, the Qjets a quite a bit more economical compared the most others. The give excellent top end when the "Man Hole Covers" open up!!

I agree.
Why have all that CFM unless you need it!

As I have said many times most use carbs with CFMs too large. As for the economy there isn't any difference between the different carbs providing they are set up correctly. As for choice of carb that is exactly that a choice. Some engine combinations work easier, not better, with one type vs another. The 650DP is a great carb it bridges a gap yet to be filled by Edelbroc. My own opinion, is replace what you have. It is probably too large as most of the older boats were, but if it ain't broke don't fix it.
