I came across this ad. I don't remember them making a 24' Cigarette with twin 4 cylinder engines. Unfortunately, I don't think running twin 4 bangers together makes that nice V8 sound.

Interesting. I have seen a cool old Bertram popup-camper-bow 24 (was on sale for quite a while up in Wisconsin) that had twin 4-bangers, but the Cigarette has me scratching my head.

Hey, found it even: http://www.thehulltruth.com/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=124417&posts=13

Anhow, twin 185s with what 20% efficiency loss for twins, feels like about a 300HP 5.7, right? But a bit heavier I'd think, with the extra drive. For a Cig 24 that would be pretty light power, no?

Misprint? Really souped up? Hmmmm.

are these the steel head/alum block engines?

are these the steel head/alum block engines?

Which, the Cig or the Bertie?

EDIT: or do you just mean my math above, regardless of what these two boats have?

That was a really cool old Bertram.

But I find the claim of 42 knot cruise/48 knot WOT a little hard to swallow. Aside from just the question of will it run that fast with that power (48 kts = 55+mph) is that the cruise speed just sounds too close to the WOT speed - that sort of spread is more common among diesels where you cruise much closer to WOT.

But still, it's a really cool boat.

-----Without pics I cant say for sure what 4-cyl. motors are in these boats. I can tell you that my El P spent most of its life until it found its way to me with twin "iron duke" Merc 4-cyl. motors and circa 1975 Merc drives. Boat would just about make it to 40 mph or maybe a bit more. It rides a bit lower in the stern now days.........Bill S

I do recall that this particular Bertram was described as having been repowered onsite at Mercury Racing, and they said something about aluminum, probably aluminum heads. 185 is higher (quite a bit higher) than most of the Merc 4 cylinders, no? I thought they were mostly around 135. So, I think this was an unusual boat.

55 didn't seem unreachable to me, but maybe a couple mph high. (The cruise doesn't mean anything in my book--how would they or anyone judge what it even meant. My guess on real cruise for the boat would be anywhere from 22-35 mph, probably close to 25, based on peak planing mpg.)

that engine started out as a 170.... graduated to a 185.... or better known as the 470 and 485... I think they went through more head gaskets than were ever stamped...

Were'nt the in line 6 cylinder 165hp Mercs the standard engines in the 24 ?
Then up the options list to 2x188's etc ....

I too would suspect that this has been repowered ... still a cool boat though.

the 470 and 485 were 4 cylinders..

the 188's were 302-2V Fords

I suspect the 165 straight six Mercs were the standard. I looked at a lot of old Bertram 24/25/26s, and the straignt sixes were the norm in the sterndrives that I saw. I don't know if they offered the V-8s as an option--not sure I ever saw a pair of those in the 24/25/26 models, but doesn't mean it wasn't ever done. I think it would be very tight if even possible, however, with the shape and layout of the engine box, especially in the rare 24 model. (As an even further aside, I heard once that the 24 hul had some relationship to the early Albemarle 24s, but I have NO IDEA if there is any truth to it. They do look similar to me though.)

When you bump up to the 28, the beam jumps up to about 10 feet I think, and it's a much heavier boat. Can't recall seing anything gas but v-8s in those, whether sterndrive or inboard.

------Theres a 28 Bertram "Baron" in a yard near me that was powered with twin Merc six cylinders when new. I could own it easily enough but it is a rough one. I had a good friend that had a Bertram "Baron" new that I spent many hours on and it came with twin HM/Volvos. There were very few Barons to begin with but I have no idea what the percentages of either powertrain would have been. Also dont know if there were any other power options. I do love those hulls!!! The beam was no ten feet on the 28 though. The Baron was a very narrow hull.......Bill S

You're right about the Baron beam being narrow--I was being unclear.

I was talking about the 28 Moppie, which (I just peeked at a listing or two) they said was 11 feet.

Sorry but the boat you have shown is not a Cigarette. It is too narrow. Check the serial number.

Just was sent this magazine by a friend. Funny thing is, there is 3 boats featured in this copy. I only own 2 boats and they are both in it. The only one missing is the 1973 24' Cigarette. Looks like I have some hunting to do. Also the original Cig they showed at the boat shows had twin 188's in it.

So, what I'm hearing is that you need a Cig 24. :kingme:

With your fleet, I'd go with the warehouse.

Sounds VERY cool. No need to make a point of doing so, but if you ever happen on any pictures of it, I'd love to see them.

I'll get some pics if I see it. Unmolested freshwater inland lake and stored on a boat lift. They had to alter the sunpad to accommodate the blower:)
