Does anyone know why some x 18's are port and others are driven from the starbord side? I am in the process of restoring a 1972 x 18 and trying to determine the correct side the steering should be on. Also any advice for steering systems. I am putting in a 383 bravo with a shortie and would anyone know the x dimension I should use.
Thanks

it depends on what drive setup they had, i would leave it on whatever side it is on now, the bravo will spin either way

Typically Volvo was left side (port) steering and Merc TRS was right side (starboard) steering, but like all things Donzi, not always the rule.

but not all trs were right hand some were left handed helm as the trs spun both ways too

I have a 16' Donzi that was originally left hand Eaton drive with left hand helm. I converted to a right hand Merc drive and of course retained the left hand helm. The lean of the boat was slightly noticable when driving alone, but with a passenger on the right, it pretty much leveled out.

That is why God invented trim tabs.

If the steering is by cable, it would be easy to have two wheels, one on either side.......jist like an airplane!!!:nilly::nilly::wink::yes:

My 73 X-18 is factory hydraulic

My X is left and VOLVO 280.

The X dimension should be 14 1/2" to be stock, which is where I would put it if I were you cuz you got the shortie. The stock location keeps the CoG low in the boat where you want it and provides clearance for the flame arrestor. Folks used to raise the "X" to achieve the "shorty" location but with available drive technology now (ie: shortie) there is no need.

:)

everyone knows left handed is quicker and plus the X 18 is faster than a standard 18 with it's aerodynamic foredeck and rear deck

seriously keep it where it was originally

I think left; however the dash has been filled execpt for where the gauges went and the transon is new and not cut out so I can do either left or right steering and also raise the x dimension. Also would anyone know if there is a special way to put the fuel tank in besides just foaming it in. I heard I should have rubber strips under it.
I also may need a rear hatch does anyone know if they are avaiable. I perfer the raised motor hatch.
Thanks
