Chris Bangle, the originator of the "Bangle Butt", has resigned.....Thank God.
What an UGLY A$$ end of a car.

I actually liked much of Bangle's work. BMW needed a Design Chief to go in and shake things up IMHO. I think the Z4 is beautiful...an example where "flame surfacing" really worked. Hard to argue that he didn't butcher the tail end of the 7, though.

Agreed that some of it worked well and some didn't. (The Z4 grew on me, for instance.) But I can't resist the cheap shot anyhow...

Bangle = Bungle + Mangle

Don't know what a bangle butt is, but I like the "Cat Eye" tail lights I keep seeing...
Just look at the tail end of any 7 of the last 5 to 7 years.....
Anything that looks like it was "tacked on" to the rear.......

I used to sweat over BMW's designs
but all that has changed except for the 6 Series.

I think the Mustang has more design, style and interest than the 3 Series now.

Jim, I agree w/you. And it says a lot for a privately held corporation to give that kind of responsibility to a single individual.
However, some theings are UGLY! Even if Hundai is copying it.

Bangle was actually out of the direct, hand's-on styling for the last couple years I believe. He was instead overseeing general design styling for the entire company but others were doing the actual design work.

He wasn't my favorite, but it wasn't all bad.

Bingo!

They toned it down after a year or so because it got so much flack.

Don't get me wrong, I'd love to have the wherewhithall to have a new BMW, but they all look Japanese to me anymore. My wife has a 2000 540i, plain jane, nothing fancy......but you know it's a BMW instantly. I talked her into it but she doesn't appreciate the car.....no good cupholders, dontcha know. :lookaroun:

Old guy down the road has a dark blue Z8, that makes me drool. Who was responsible for that gem?

I'd still trade a lot of them for a nice, old tii any day of the week. Except maybe a new M5!

Try driving one. They don't look Japanese from behind the wheel!

Btw, I also agree that the 5's from that era were very handsome cars.

The Z8 was based on a Henrik Fisker designed concept. I believe Fisker also did some fairly recent Aston cars. It was definitely a beauty.

Think the Bangle Butt is ugly? Check out the BMW Air Camper (http://www.autoblog.com/2007/02/02/think-the-bangle-butt-is-ugly-check-out-the-bmw-air-camper/)

We could think of many captions for this picture that would have us on the floor in stitches, but we'll leave that up to you in the comments. For our part, we'll tell you why this BMW 1-Series has a severely swollen rear end. The inflatable sphere hanging off the back is called the "Air Camper". According to Winding Road, which discovered the accessory in Intersection Magazine (http://www.intersectionmagazine.com/), the UK-based high-fashion mag commissioned BMW to produce the bubble camper in conjunction with the launch of the 1-Series a couple years ago. It sleeps two and is inflated by a low-voltage fan that draws power from the car's cigarette lighter. The add-on magically transforms the 1-Series into the Ultimate Camping Machine, and has the added bonus of hiding the polarizing lines of BMW's Bangle-era rear ends
