I have a S&W Model 19-4 .357 Mag w/ 6"barrel. It has a small grip unlike I have seen on others. Even with a 6" barrel it makes a pretty good carry gun but I would not use it for self defense unless you are deaf or regularly wear earmuffs. If you miss, you could set your self up for a liability suit if the perp sues you for loss of hearing . I assume it is 1978 vintage. I would part with it if someone wanted it bad enough.

This past week, I bought this Taurus 357 magnum with the red dot scope from an individual for $550. It is an 8 shot revolver with a ventilated rib and it is ported to keep the recoil down. It is a fairly heavy gun at 4 1/2lbs, but it is supposed to be very accurate. He had taken one deer with it before selling it to me. I thought I would mention this brand in case you are still looking and wanted to consider buying one. The barrel on this one is 8.375". Bill

The only Colt Python (nickel finish) I ever owned from the 70s I traded as a down payment on a yellow Donzi GT 21 in about 1987 to a guy on our local boat ramp who was selling the boat -
The only Colt I have now is an 8" ss Anaconda 44 magnum, but it is not really much fun to shoot without the porting - too much recoil. Got to love the Colts though - Bill

I have that same gun...and couldn't agree more on the noise factor. :shocking: I usually keep it loaded with 38 specials which aren't quite as loud.

Colts are by far the smoothest action of any DA revolver I have ever shot. I grew up shooting the Python 357 and Diamondback 22 & 38s. Shot side by side with S&W revolvers, there's just no comparison. But the quality and rarity makes them ridiculously un-affordable these days.

I take it you got it back and had him arrested since you know who stole it.

Better get a 44. My eight inch Colt Anaconda has been the death of many a wild hog, and it's my favorite gun. I had a guy that worked for me steal my 357 Python. A 44 is quite a bit larger than the 357, I never had to shoot it twice. The largest was a 320 pound barr.

I have the same pistol. I'm not a big guy, but the recoil doesn't bother me at all. I loaded some of my own that were pretty hot, and not much fun to shoot. :(

I should mention that I have now shot the Taurus quite a bit and love it. The recoil is very light and the accuracy is awesome. I alternate between 38 specials and 357 mags with not much difference except for the price and sound. There is a one click difference in the sight setting at 75 ft. which is the maximum at the indoor range I use. Bill

I've killed more than a few wild hogs in my day. I use an 8 inch Colt Anaconda. You should go with a 44.

A 357 will make you go deaf. It's more of a loud crack, and the 44 is more of a boom.

I recently bought a 454 Casull, but I have been warned about the recoil - even though mine has porting. I have yet to shoot it, but I got some 45 long colts to try in it first. I understand they produce much less recoil than the 454 Casull cartridges. I will try to remember to post what I think about the gun. Bill

Last Sunday, I got a chance to shoot a few pistols including the 454 Casull. It actually had less recoil using the 45 long colts than the Anaconda 44 mag (non ported). It had about the same recoil as a non ported 357 mag. I have not shot an actual 454 Casull round yet, but I am not nearly as intimidated as I once was. Bill
