I was reading this story in my powerboat mag feb 2009 issue. It goes on about custom computer recalibration. "Individual boat owners can pull the computer modules from their out-of-warranty engines, from 350 mags to 496 mag hos,and whipple will recalibrate them to produce more power using 92-octane,as opposed to 87-octane,gasoline.gains of 10 to 40hp." I was thinking if I dont buy the 27zr this year, that I might get a performance exhaust system installed.(10 percent increase is 30 hp)Then send whipple my computer and see what happens.(another 10 to 40hp)My 350mag/300hp.So say I go up a total of 50hp,Maybe I would go from 60-62 mph to 65mph.:cool!:

How fast was your 28Zx?? or was it a 26? I thought that thing would haul the mail!! I thought that the 22 ZX was hopped up and had a blower already. I saw the price on it. I did not realize that it was a stock small block! How much slower are you now than in your old boat?

I talked to Dustin Whipple about this very thing a couple weeks ago, they get 699.00 for the recal. FYI thats 10% of the whipple supercharger, if you decide to do it report back on your results, in the mean time I'm saving up for something with a little whine to it. Steve

Oh ya,I was kind of joking. My old 28zx w 600+ hp. went 75 -78 mph gps.Ive got a deal pending on a 27zr.Ive heard that they only go 65 mph from a owner that Ive talked to.:garfield:Speedboat mag test has them running 70.2 mph. This 27zr is a lot lighter then my old 28zx and if I put some hp in it I would expect to hit 80.:cool!:

I used az speed and marine once to recalibrated ecu.Never again,I hear a lot of bad things on web sites about them and yes I did burn up my heads too. Then I re-did everything and went to a msd/carb set-up.So,I was thinking of going with whipple if I do it again, for my 350 mag.Again if I dont get the 27zr.

When are you going to complete the sale? I would think that a 27 ZR with a 496 Mag would do 70 mph. That is going to be a sweet boat!

Don't know what year your 350 mag. is but if it has the ecum555 As far as I know Mecury and Dustin are the only ones that hold the key to get into them and do changes. Steve

Yes,az-marine did my 1998 502.The 350 mag is only changed by mercury and whipple.Thats why the procharger suppercharger company is out of luck and can not do the newer model 350 mag,s.

I think that you are right!

what EXACTLY does Whipple change but a few degree's timing here and there? is that really worth $700 ? there isn't much, if anything, in fuel programming, it's pretty much spot on already.. you'd be better off with a set of $300 true roller rockers and a couple other tricks and stay with 87 octane...

Whipple can unlock a 555. Part of any EFI supercharger they sell is a ECM re-flash.

I will say, messing with an ECM on a stock engine is not a good idea. It is real easy to run it too lean and grenade it. I think there are easier ways to pickup hp than a ECM re-flash.

Mark Boos at Precision Marine in New Orleans will do a custom ECU tune for $250. At least he did for me. That only counts reflashing with customer supplied air/fuel ratio vs. rpm. I bought a wide band O2 sensor and took readings every 250rpm. Then he burned the ECU for me. He also did for free a couple of tweaks later on. Great guy.

I met him while he was tuning a pair of 500EFI's that were turned into 540's. That costs a little more- customer flew him out for the day, paid ??? for in person tuning.

Actually the 555 ecm is open to the public There is no lock on it anymore. There are several in Atlanta that can do it. However They only do stuff on the engines they build. So they know what they are getting into.

Now that is something that I did not know!! Mark said that it is really a lot better computer and it can do a lot more stuff but I thought that Dustin and Mercury were the only ones that could change the cal in it.

Simple, the whole Whipple supercharger kit for the 350 mag. but the Alpha ain't gonna like it. Steve

Yep.. The engine isnt a bad platform, but the drive would be the issue. That boat with a SB & boost is a rocket.. I have done it.. ;) :) Jamie / Lakeside

As a slight side note;
the 27ZR with a 496HO will do 70 to 71mph (our at least ours does). When they came out, I had heard that hull #1 was in the mid to low 60's due to being a tad heavy?

Going to start a new thread regarding 496HO mods as a few great pointers have been brought up here as far as AZ speed and burned up heads.
