actually a day of spare no expense, today is gonna cost us 3 times as much as when Bush was sworn in. and the press is covering this like it was the oscars or something ?? what happened to gov't by the people for the people, not Gov't paid for by the people.
leaders lead seems all we have are followers and we have not had a real leader in a long time.
todays is historic in more way then one

I'm confused. According to the very sources cited above, taxpayers do pay about two-thirds of the overall estimated cost. About 45 million of 150 million estimated total came from private donations, and the balance is paid from our tax dollars. BTW, right or wrong, this is consistent with other sources I have heard before today.

What am I missing? Are we splittting a hair between a piece of the inauguration, like, the ceremony itself, but skipping all of the other infrastructure costs? There must be a disconnect here somewhere.

Is it just me, or do you get a sense that 'Cult of Personality' should be playing in the background whenever BO walks into a room?

I get it - like the guy or not, this is a significant moment in our history. The first time we've ever elected anybody but a white male to lead the country. But shouldn't this be a somewhat more somber occasion than the party it's become? I'm not trying to take anything away from the man himself, but I wish he wasn't being treated like a pop star. Then again, I suppose it's better for little Suzy to swoon over a President than some American Idol idiot.

Well, aren't you just a regular ray of sunshine?

I think you're on the mark (though I do wonder if it isn't better for Suzy to swoon over something that is honestly and openly shallow).

As much as I detest the politics for which Obama stands, as much as I think the best he can possibly do is to run a tighter ship further in the wrong direction, and as much as I believe he is a liar and a socialist...for me there is still some solace to be taken in the progress in people's hearts and minds when the color of a man's skin loses some of its relevance, and his lying, scheming, and political maneuvering serves to advance his own career and cheat the people just as can any lying white jerk politician.

On Saturday night, I made my ususal stop by my local liquor store on my way to play cards with the boys. It's a small mom and pop store, run by an older black couple. I don't know them more than the relationship I describe, but as business proprietors go they have always struck me as very sweet, friendly, good people who run a business I like to frequent. Though I've probably been in there 50-100 times, I don't know them well, but I like what I know.

So, perhaps I am reading too much into this, but on Sat night, the usual football or basketball game on their TV was replaced by wall-to-wall CNN fawning over Obama, and they were beaming as I have never seen them before--something had them in a state like I have never seen. As much as I think Obama is a horrible mistake for us all, them included, it greatly warmed my heart to see them so happy. At their ages, they have been adults in times where equality of opportunity was nonexistent, and race decided an entire group of second-class citizens. Good chance they went to segregated schools in the same buildings right here in town that I attended after desegregation. The change in attitudes from that time, and the proof of that which the Obama Presidency demonstrates, is truly a silver lining to me. For that progress in attitudes, I am truly thankful.

That is how I will try always to think about today.

I have decided I'm not going to say or even think anything negative even though I believe it's the wrong person.......Of course I wasn't happy with any of the candidates.
The occasion obviously means a lot to many people so I say "Enjoy the day and the honeymoon".
There's going to be some tough times ahead, and I'm not sure the new president and congress has what it takes to get it done.

Being a switch hitter and still being a little torn I was not going to comment, early on I was a staunch Obama supporter, he seemed brilliant and spoke of many things I believed in. And like many I felt it was about time that a black man got into office. I made the largest political donation I have ever made to his election fund. But when so much stuff came out and I felt at least some had to be true. Not that happy I switched to what I felt was a better choice and azz kicking gal and really a true patriot. With Obama think about the dollars from Fanny May, many millions in donations from foreign interests which is 100% illegal, pretty much proven voter fraud, involvements with some more then questionable characters and the list goes on. I have since had several conversations with various officials and politicians and asked why non of this seemed to matter to the legal minds of our country, seven out of ten said the streets would run red with the anarchy that would prevail. They felt once he started to get rolling the die was cast and all we can do is hope he does not swing left, if he does swing left they predict disaster for our nation! Frankly that scares the heck out of me, no telling where that would go but I bet it would not be anything we want to see. I have several black friends/associates many are very well educated and they also worry what may transpire if he handles it wrong. This day in history may be one of the greatest or end up being one of the worst. That being said I will stand behind him praise and support all he does that is good! He has the opportunity to be on the cover of history books. We can only hope and pray that is plays out for the good of the people! God Bless Mr. Obama and God Bless us all!

Couldn't haven't said it better myself, Don. That's been the problem for months. Personally, I didn't get the opportunity to watch the inauguration or listen to his speech, but I'm sure I'll find the time to stream it online. My problem is that I'm steering away from all major news sources right now because I become so freakin' depressed when I hear the doom and gloom that I don't even want to get out of bed and go to work. Optimism, anyone?

I think my comment about 'cult of personality' may have gotten a bit off track. Understandable when you read the full song lyrics, and given the general opinion of the board.

I wasn't trying to bad mouth Obama; only commenting that too many people seem to be treating the inauguration like some sort of celebrity sighting. I felt the moment deserved a bit more gravity.

But, I can't disagree that a lot of people seem to be overwhelmed with the 'idea' of Obama more than anything else.

No need for fellow registry members to chime in on that last line...

For the record, I think the glitch in reciting the oath was Roberts's fault. Thought that as I listened, and on reflection after.

Doesn't change my thoughts about Obama an iota, but that one was on Roberts. I'd bet he'd say it was entirely his fault.

Far more important is whether Obama will uphold the Constitution, as he has sworn to do, but prior behavior is the best predictor, and why would he start now?

I wasn't trying to bad mouth him either, this is what I truly have thought about him for months. God help us have an original thought of our own. Let's let the Big "O" do our thinking for us. I thought the big O meant Oscar Robertson. He had a better jump shot, so let's make him the leader.

I agree, and think there is a very interesting twist here worth noting: a classic case of everybody getting it wrong. In short, I see Obama as another politician, aside from the obvious difference, not so unlike many before him.

What is historic and commendable are the many decades of the improvement in attitudes of the people of this nation, not Obama. And yet, the Cult of Personality worship shows even that being misunderstood. Obama is not the big deal. The change in society that allows the election of Obama is the big deal. The greatness is in the people, not the man.

Which raises the question of the earlier discussions to retain a politics only forum and a poll to vote ya or nay. I entered my vote along with a cash contribution. I don't recall ever seeing an official decision.

The discussions on this site were civil and thought provoking. They were a help in exploring a number of issues in more depth than one can normally achieve brain storming with ones self.
