Well, when I was cleaning the garage, I ran across this little sports trivia book, and figured what the heck. I breezed through it, and there is lots of different trivia, horse racing, golf, all the team sports / etc.

Anyway, I hope you enjoy. I will post the correct answer to the previous days question each day when I post the new question.

01/13:

What Kentucky Derby first did Favored Regret achieve in 1915?

While matty is technically correct, I (the trivia book) was looking for the first official ROY - and since you said Jackie Robinson first in your list, I'll give 'ya the point :D.

"Jackie Robinson, in 1947 (It wasn't until 1949 that the award was given to the top rookie in both the NL and AL)

I'll have to give 1 bonus point to matty though for being technically correct :D

I was just told by a co-worker that the first night game took place in the 1880's? So that makes me believe there's a good chance I have ABSOLUTELY no freakin' clue what I'm talking about.

If it was that early, given the history of electrical development, I would almost think it was a pure exhibition event. Given the Edison base in NJ, and the first power plant they did in lower Manhattan, I'd think Jefe's on the right track as to team locale.

The first park to host an MLB night game was Crosley field in Cincinnati, Ohio.

It was on May 24 1935, the Reds beat the Phillies 2 - 1 .

President Franklin Roosevelt actually turned on the lights remotely from Washington D.C.

well since i was "TECHNICALLY" the last time technically the questions says "baseball's" referring to the game of baseball not the game of MLB so then the answer is 1880 in boston :)

The following description of the first night game of baseball was taken from Baseball 1845–1881, by Preston B. Orem.

The First Night Baseball Game,
September 2, 1880
With the invention of the electrical light and carbon arc lamps of considerable power, the promoters of these contrivances cast their eyes upon baseball. Why not play it at night?

So the Boston press was invited to Nantasket Beach, Massachusetts to see the first trial on September 2, 1880.

Three Hundred thronged the balconies of the Sea Foam House on Strawberry Hill. 36 carbon lamps had been placed in communication with a dynamo-electric generator, operated by a 30 horse power engine. To support the lamps three towers, 100 feet high and 500 feet apart, were placed so as to overlook a triangle spot just beneath the northern piazzas of Sea Foam House. The lamps were disposed twelve in a group, the total illuminating power being announced as 90,000 candles, or 30,000 candles for each tower.

The flood of mellow light, thrown upon the field between 8 and 9:30 p.m., allowed nine innings to be played. Employee teams of the business firms Jordan, Marsh & Co., and R. H. White & Co., played a tie game, 16 to 16. The light was quite imperfect and there were lots of errors made. The players had to bat and throw with caution. For the spectators the game had little interest as only the movements of the pitcher, in general, could be discerned, while the course of the ball eluded the vision of the watchers.

The showing was far from impressive. None of the reporters believed the idea to be at all practical.

:cool!:

Fair enough, two correct answers,..... Boston 1880, and Cincinatti in 1935.

Though I'm just copying from a book, I'll try to get a little more specific, though I suspect the book I'm referencing is referring to what we commonly know - ie, the first modern night games, and the first MLB rookie of the year. Just as a side question - regarding the rookie of the year, if is wasn't MLB, what the heck was it??

wayne just bustin a little ;)
just post em as they are written :)

the ROY award was for professional baseball or MLB but the award was not official til 47 so from 40 to 46 it was just an award given by the writers, funny how the baseball writers have an association and have so much power regarding the game of baseball, awards , voting for the hall of fame. never really understood that, how someone who never played the game can have such clout, not like that in any other sport. well the BCS is BS too

I know this isn't like a super serious, double probation competition, but I hate it when the book isn't right. I'm not a huge sports nut, so I don't know half of the little "well actuallies,.."

Wayne, the term Habs is a shortened nickname for Les Habitants ... Habitants is the name used to refer to both the French settlers and the inhabitants of French origin who farmed the land along the two shores of the St. Lawrence Gulf and River in what is the present-day Province of Quebec in Canada.

The team in Montreal is the Canadiens, not the Canadians. Slight distinction, but an important one.....

In my household when I was growing up they were never referred to as the Canadiens, the Habs, or Les Habitants.
They were often called a much more colorful Anglo name that I am sure the good Senator would recognize.... :D

the ball park was built in upper manhattan at the highest elevation on the island between 165th and 168th streets. built on a hill hence the name the highlanders
locally it was referred to as hilltop park it's formal name was american league park

well since we are on NY city baseball i will give you this little factoid.

when the Mets ( metropolitans) came into being in the early 60's they were a nation league team and they were to replace the dodgers and the giants who left for the west coast.

to pay homage to the great teams and the history of baseball in NY city
they designed the mets uniform to have an item from each of the 3 teams from the city

the dodgers ( now the LA dodgers)
the giants ( now the san fransico giants)
the yankees

from the dodgers uniform the mets took the baseball flying over the brooklyn bridge and turned it into the baseball flying over the metropolitan skyline of ny city

from the giants they took the overlapping orange N Y emblem from thier cap

and from the yankees they took the pinstripes that adorned the yankees home uniform

so the mets home uniform was a combination of all 3 teams in an effort to appeal to all NY city fans

mattyboy

yes the cue is legal but how you use it might not be as long as you meet the following requirements

it must be part of the 14 declared clubs

it cannot be chalked up or the tip cannot have any square groves or any other characteristics to give an unfair advantage

you cannot shoot it like a pool shoot, were as your body stradles the line of the putt you have to be on one side of the line of the putt or the other so you would have to shoot it like a side rail shot

Which is greater, the height of a regulation basketball hoop, or the distance from the ground to the uprights in football?

Trick question?

I know the rim is 10 feet above the floor, and I thought the cross bar was 10 feet also.

Had the same thought. (for a minute I thought the trick might be whether the bottom of the uprights were at the top or bottom of the crossbar, but I think they sit on it, hence the top. Makes me think they're both 10'.)

the height of the uprights is greater they never end they technically are infinite

They do go up infinitely, but they start at 10' from the ground, likewise, the basketball hoop is also 10' from the ground.

Hmmm, all these unknown but estimated measurement questions feel like they're building up to some sort of d1ck joke, but sucker that I am, I'll keep taking educated guesses.

Seems like it's in the 14-18 inch range. I'll go with 18".

well

the Big A refers to Aqueduct race track( elmont section of queens) where the belmont stakes is run

but if you are looking for a nickname for a horse

I would guess Affirmed

Affirmed would have been my only guess as well. Had no idea about the track. Matty's rolling.
