From Wiki:

The pronunciation /ˈbuːi/, while chiefly American (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/American_English), more closely resembles the modern French bouĂ©e IPA: [bu.e] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:IPA).[1] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Buoy#cite_note-0)

Oh crap. Once word gets aournd that we're using a FRENCH pronounciation there'll be hell to pay...

Of course, we have our own unique pronunciations. Here are two towns from my home state of Indiana.

Loogootee - La go Tee
Dubois - Do Boys
