for used boats in the over 50K range are bottoming out, do you think that they will rebound when things get better. For example say someone buys something at a steal because of the market and has a great desireable model. However all things considered all the other comps have dropped as well. Do you think in few years when things in the economy are better the boat will return to it's original value are do you think once it sells for a low price that model will never go back up?
Does this make any sense at all? HH knows what I am thinking here...This Biz model can be applied to performance boats, cruisers , sportfish ,etc....what does the future hold? I am considering something in the future here and would like to think that the great deal could be parlayed into getting my money back after using it for a few years and than selling to upsize to something bigger...in the end it costs me nothing other than upgrades and fuel for the said unit and I lose nothing over 3-5 years...get my drift.
HedgeHog what do you think?

Models may show that it jumps back up and you can flip it, but IMHO..it will take longer than the model projects and you will then need to add back the depreciation over time to get true value. Think time horizon for resale value may be longer so ROI may not be what ya expect........my 2 cents..hope I'm wrong.

Tex, I would love to see you get ahold of whatever it is that you're wanting, but I wouldn't pull the trigger too quick. I think you're going to need to be prepared to keep it for a while. I believe that the economy and boat market will get better, but it's going to take some time. Kinda the same as the real estate market. Not a bad idea to make an investment in either one, but you'll need to be prepared to wait a while before you resale IMO. Good luck!

Really don't mind waiting....I think I am just trying to justify my purchase. I do no think I will make money but entertaining the thought of not losing any really appeals to me.

As for the casino cash I made a couple of big bets that did not pay off. I wish there was a craps table in there....its all I know how to play.

FWIW, and I'm not exactly a profit here, I'd say you can't expect the price to rise on your purchase. As the economy improves you will see an increase in the sale price of new boats, but the used boats already sold at a very reduced price will mean the owners are into them for less and will be more willing to sell them for less when that time comes, thus holding the resale market down. Yes, the higher price of new boats will drag the prices the best used boats up as well, but marginally.

Read this as: you can get a good deal while the market is down and if you sell it while the market is up you'll loose less money. Maybe, depending on the model's desirability and market timing, you'll break even on the purchase price.

Of course, I wouldn't expect to recoup the cost of upgrades and maintenance.

On a depreciating asset like a boat, not loosing money, or only loosing a little, is actually a win.

All said though, it comes to this - it's the best time to buy a boat/car/house that we've seen in decades! Almost daily I find some reason to wish I was in a better position to buy one of those three now.

Well said. He is paying cash and will probably keep it more than a couple of years.

Good time to buy.

Great point. If you only lose a little it will be like you made a ton. Plus it most likely isn't worse than wall street as an investment. Plus when was the last time you had a good time hanging out on your stocks.

Yea...I pulled the trigger on an economy car Saturday...I figured the rebates were as good as they were going to get.
