This is what happens when I’m left home alone too long….I start thinking of stuff like this to bug you guys with….

Years ago Peter Egan (writes for Road & Track and Motorcylist) wrote an article about ‘cylinder count’. Basically, he looked around his place at all the motorized devices he had and realized he had a heck of a lot of cylinders to keep happy and healthy. He wondered if this wasn’t some sort of gearhead yardstick.

Periodically, something happens to remind me of this and I stop and tally up my cylinder count. Today I had to reacquaint myself with my long lost buddies the log splitter and chainsaw and that got me thinking.

So here’s the current score:

Donzi – 8
Dodge – 8
BMW – 6
Speed Triple – 3
Adventurer – 3
15 hp Merc – 2
XR250 – 1
Log splitter – 1
Lawn mower – 1
Weed eater – 1
Portable generator – 1
Chain saw – 1
Pressure washer - 1

All pretty standard up to this point, but then I bust out the secret weapon:

Carver 32 – 20 (twin 454s + 4 cyl gen)

For a total of 57. Pretty strong – who’s gonna top it? I figure some of you guys have fleets of vehicles for your business (Donziweasle?) that would put you over the top. I’ll leave it to you to decide if those should count or not.

No wonder the globe is warming. And no wonder it seems like I have alot to maintain.

hmmmm...I never considered A/C cylinders. I was going mainly for cylinders that have spark plugs. Or maybe glow plugs.

(can't count my air compressor...2 cylinders, but electric; and my house A/C-heater is dead at the moment, hence the work with the wood splitter today)

I've also a 351 long block on an engine stand, but I'm putting it in the no-show catagory as well as it's a non-runner and I don't even have anything to put it in.

And yeah, looking over the list I realized it's about time to do the annual service on both boats.

No wonder I am always doing maintenance - I counted 118 cylinders in 24 gas powered devices - all running. The only engine that is probably needing a rebuild is the 428 in a 1967 Thunderbird, but it runs. I didn't count the 15 or so nitro burning motors in some radio controlled boats since they don't run with spark plugs. Tires on the ground is 80. Bill

A mere 32 (thankfully down from last year's 40 since I sold the Cobalt 220.) I have a feeling I may be low-man on the list.

Not to hijack, but what internal combustion engines have had the MOST cylinders????
There's been a bunch of 24 cylinder engines, so let's not even start there......

Don, I'll move or delete this if you like.

Same here. Will take a stab with this (found at http://www.eugal.com/html/Aircraft%20engineering/20080403/7943.html):

"Wright Aeronautical had an R-2160 with 42 cylinders (6 banks of 7 cyls.) that was used on some experimental aircraft during WWII; mainly the Republic XP-69 (mid-engine tractor type)and Northrop XP-56 flying wing (mid-engine pusher. Also it was water-cooled, not air-cooled."

Very good Mike!
Some mistakes in the data though.
It was intended for those aircraft, but development never got that far. They built a total of three engines and two of them actually ran. They were way off on power and time was passing them by.
The original commission was for an engine of 3000 HP and "no wider than a fighter pilot's a$$." It was extremely compact. Since it was liquid cooled, there was no reason to stagger the cylinders like in air cooled radials, so the cylinders were all lined up and detachable, six cylinder, double over head cam heads were attached to each "line" of cylinders for a total of seven heads.
Another unusual characteristic was so that there wasn't a long, whippy crankshaft, there're three crankshafts coupling together two rows, or 14 cylinders each. The power was taken out of each crankshaft through seven sets of spur gears to longitudinal shafts that ran between each line of cylinders to the propellor reduction gear box on the front and the centrifugal supercharger at the rear of the engine.
What a nightmare.

Hmmmm...I'm not sure on this but I'd have to guess a radial aero motor. My plane knowledge is pretty poor, but I think some of them were pretty crazy

Ah! perssure washer! I knew I'd forget something! That bumps me to 57.

Now think about all these internal combustion engines out there the next time somebody starts talking about alternative fuels and just imagine the mountain they'll have to climb.

I'll see if I can scan some pages.
There really is a whole book published on an engine that never went into production.

There was an engine that RR prototyped at the beginning of WW-II that was a 2 stroke V-12 gas engine that was unthrottled and was set up with pre chambers like a lot of diesels. It would actually run at a air/fuel ratio of 35/1 !!!!!!!!!!
There were a lot of engines built during WW-II that just ran out of time....then of course jets passed them up.

I suggest you copy this list to your significant other and use it as leverage to get that new bike/boat/car/tool you've been looking for.

After all, it can't be good for your relationship if you're the low man on the list...how could she ever bear to be seen with you in public?

And gas is like ... give-away cheap now. And it can only go down in the future.

Right?

With one simple purchase of a Gallardo LP560, you could be up to 31 just like that. ;)
