Got my MerCruiser service manuals on the TRS and 454s to day from ebay, money well spent. After a quick look through i learned somethings i never would have even thought of like, i had know idea the out drives had so many grounds on them. Im going to have to get some more tools. And dont laugh remember im still new at this but i didnt know i couldnt pull the engines with out removing the out drives first. Thanks for the advice.

As far as I know the TRS is the only Merc. drive package that you can leave the drive in place and remove the engine.

What about the BorgWarner trans. can i separate the engine from it or dose it come out too?

I remove the bolts on the bellhousing, and engine support bolts from the block. The bellhousing and trans stay in the boat. The torque damper comes out with the engine.

Edit; After looking at pic.

Actually with the Borg and Merctran you can remove the engine with trans attached and leave drive intact. Volvo can be removed without the drive as well I used to do what the Farmer did but I don't anymore they come out and go in together. In my case the trans is the weakest link. You make the decidion

Manuals are wonderful things (particularly at the price they charge).
You come off looking like a genious every time.
Also, you don't have to wait for someone to respond after you ask your question.

I got it out It wasnt so bad its just the unknown that scares you. There was a hidden bolt be hind the starter I didnt see it cause the starter didnt look like it needed to come off but it did. The engine sliped right out of the trans and there is a clutch disc looking thing on the flywheel. Is there any thing to inspect on the trans wile the engine is out?

I got it apart it spun #6 rod bearing. And yes your right it has brass freeze plugs. I pulled the sparkplugs out they were soot black and when i got the heads off i saw that the cylinders were polished with no crosshach and no wear. I guess these engine has been run rich its hole life and just washed the rings out.

did the engine have a thermostat? running too cold will glaze the walls like that..

That motor is a nice Marine package. That disclaimer is put on them for legal reasons. It saves GM the price of CG approval for under deck use.

Yes it was new do to the overheating problems that this engine has had for a wile. But i dont know about before we got it. Thank goodness we found the problem it was the stuck valve. Now we can concentrate on fixing everything else.
